If I had the money, I would definitely invest it and not buy this.

Sweet whip. I'm not too certain as to how the final price will be set by Audi BUT, I would imagine that it wouldn't exceed that of the M3 (aka the Benchmark) by much. Time will tell I suppose.

The 2012 projection seems pretty far out though....as in the E92 will be long in the tooth by then, and a new generation 3-series forthcoming (read: F# chassis).

Invest it in what? Something returning 2% APY?

I'd get a lot more out of that $1400-2000 in interest I'd lose out on per year if it was spent driving an RS5.

I'm sure everyone hopes you are correct on this. I would make sense to try to keep the price in line with the M3. BUT, isn't Audi one of the most overpriced cars? If you look at hp per dollar aren't they the most pricey? I know BMW isn't too far behind, and I know BMW 'options' you to death, but Audi just seem to go way over the top price wise.

The S5 is only $6k less than the M3. There is no way a RS5 is going to be anywhere close to a M3.

If you look at an S4 and a 335xi the price isn't very far off I don't think.

Really the A4 is the one where everyone says, "WTF?" because they try to get $45k for a 2.0T

Honestly, all I have to go on is the MSRP with some direction on what Edmunds might allege people pay for the models in either brand. Audi just may sticker for higher than the equivalent BMW but that's not to say that the real world 'out the door' price for the former may be less. (But as far as MSRP goes, ...I do think Audi is overpriced.)

That said, I imagine there'll be little wiggle room from the MSRP on both the M3 and RS5.

x2

I kind of hope it's expensive so I don't see that many on the streets lol. Then again, I rarely see RS4s anyway.

Although it may seem overpriced, the A4 is about the same price as the 328 with comparable options, which seems pretty fair to me.

cars cost much more outside the U.S.A! i would expect the rs5 to have a price of 70-80k

there is too much competition from the m3 and cts-v, just like these cars the rs5 is just an a5 with different bumpers, interior bits, and engine/handling components

Scoping out a current gen S4 on the NJ Turnpike, I came to the conclusion that it's a sweeter looking ride than the E90 M3. In the looks department Audi > BMW......and just about everything else <= it's price range (and some above).
