Back in the 60's, one of my co-workers bought a used 1966 Pontiac Tempest LeMans with a 326CID two-barrel engine and automatic transmission. He was getting some valve clatter (yes, it can occur with hydraulic lifters) and asked me to do a valve adjustment for him since I had a set of lifter clips (you do valve adjustments on hydraulic lifters with the engine running). When we pulled his valve cover I could not believe the sludge in that head. It was collecting on the valve springs, and all along the gutters where the oil flows back down to the pan. I guessed then that the prior owner never did an oil change but probably just added oil when it was needed. What a mess it was.

I change the Mobil1 myself in both my CL-S and FX35 every 5k miles RELIGIOUSLY...
I know it's a little over-kill, but it's only one extra oil change a year so, whatever. I Seafoamed my CL-S for the first time (via the vacuum line) at 160k miles and got almost no carbon discharge at all. I was almost a little disappointed but at the same time relieved my engine is, for the most part, clean at 10 years of age.
Even after 5k miles on full synthetic, my FX is a little lower on oil. Must be a VQ thing.

My buddy had a Cougar that he went about 15k miles in between oil changes. One day it started sounding like a helecopter and the next thing you know, kaboom! Engine was toast. How that BMW engine went 60k between oil changes without blowing up is beyond me.

Sounds Familiar...
My cousin had that "maintenance-forgetting" problem.
He had a '96 eclipse (back when Fast and Furious came out ) and he was constantly F***ing with the stereo, paint job, wheels, neon tubes, body kits, etc. Different shit every month. Did all his own work(fiberglass, bodywork). But, he NEVER checked the oil! He went through 3, yes 3, engines in a very short period of time. The first 2 seized up from lack of oil or old oil, and the third had some problem from the factory. It is a real shame. Last time I checked, the car is sitting on blocks in a relative's backyard. The body is mint and has a custom carbon fiber paint job (surprisingly, looks decent)... and yet, it sits.
People like this should stick to riding bikes.

I do if I get past 5000 and it's low. I usually change it myself and sometimes I just don't have the time.
This past Wednesday I had my mechanic do it since it was already in the shop. First time in 3 years that someone other than me changed the oil.
