I think a reasonable cross-shopping list would be:
Acura TL, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G37, Lexus GS/IS, MB C class, Volvo S60.

In that class, I think the 3's are with the IS and C on the smallish side.

The GS and CTS are 5 series competitors.

The GS overlaps both 3's on the high end and 5's in the mid-low end in price. And I don't think anybody looking at a 5 is gonna consider a CTS except for patriotism in which case the 5 is out of the question. And the CTS is priced perfectly in mid 3 territory.

Basically, the class of the car is less important than the "class" of the buyer. All the cars mentioned above are going to be considered by the same group of buyer looking for a car within a certain budget, size, prestigue, etc. range.

lol? I'd consider the 3-series, A4, TSX, IS and C-Class as their own segment or "class" so in that case the 3 probably would have the most room in its class. Competitors on the other hand, are somewhat likely to be within the same price range.

Comparing on basis of price is, however, unfair. I doubt the same person shopping for an Audi S5 would also be shopping for a C6 Corvette and vice versa. a 335i and an S5 on the other hand, yes.

And wake me up when BMW completely drops their I6 and only uses V6s and AWD standard on all their cars. By then I'll be able to get in my spaceship and "drive" a BMW to Mars and rent a room there....

Lots of opinions on this, mine included but the facts are:

Inline 6 is naturally balanced

Inline 6 has 7 main bearings and all else being equal is a stronger design in high hp applications.

Inline 6 is as long as a V12 with a higher center of gravity so packaging requirements are probably the biggest factor in which design to use.

My little V6 on a stockish bottom end requires a girdle to live at my hp levels. Failure point is the main webbing being torn out of the block and the crank being run over. If that load were spread out among 7 bearings and not 4, I guarantee the girdle would not be needed.

Sorry for bringing this back up, I couldn't help myself.

Nah. I bought my TL and signed up here right about the time the bodyshop stole the interior and many bodypieces from the GN and left town. I was pretty tired of cars at that time.
