Or maybe it has already..
Obviously we are very much aware of FWD, RWD, AWD, 4WD, etc.
However, has a manufacturer ever thought about a system that that was either FWD or RWD with AWD assist?
Now I know some of you guys are thinking "wtf?" But let's think about this for a second. Obviously hybrid power is here to stay, so I wonder if it would be possible to make a car primarily FWD or RWD but be able to use AWD assist only when absolutely necessary. This would mean the electric motor would power the rear wheels. Everyone know that having AWD is nice when it's only needed, other than that it's just extra power lost through the drive wheels with a slight decrease in fuel economy. So why not have two wheels powered by the gas engine and two wheels powered by the electric motor thus eliminating the loss of mpg you get in an AWD car. Not to mention in an AWD car more power is lost while being planted to the wheels.
Confused?
Let me try to elaborate some..
Say you're just driving to and from work.
In this situation the car would run primarily FWD.
At any given time if the driver was to press the accelerator pedal down to let's say 70% at that point you would have the electric motor kick in and power the rear wheels thus getting a faster acceleration.
Once the driver let's off the pedal below 70% the electric motor would shut off and the car would switch back to FWD.
Again the goal to this would be that you're not losing as much power to the wheels when it's needed because you'd essentially have the gas motor driving the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels.
Electric motors are great for torque because it's avaliable at any given moment and can deliver all of the torque instantly thus having a faster acceleration.
Kinda like how today a lot of engines are designed with cylinder deactivation, when the ecu detects that the driver isn't using the accelerator as much it would shut down from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders until the demand for power is needed.
Who am I kidding this is probably been invented for years now and I'm just getting with the program lol.

You know you wrote this because you were curious and sober as fuck.
Actually no...
I have no problem admitting to something embarrassing I've done. I'm not going to come up with some sorry excuse to try and cover up something I've said.
I'm never up that late, especially during the week.
But get this guys, I came up with a revolutionary idea that's gonna make me rich AF. A transmission with essentially 2 clutches in it that are actuated by a computer, allowing for a car to change gears in milliseconds. I'm gonna be rich!!!
