If you don't like the Legacy/Outback, take a look at a Forester.

How 'bouts the Mazda3 five door hatch???

True, it's not really a wagon, but it has a lot of flexibility, offers decent gas mileage and is in the price range you want.

My the girl I just broke up with has a Mazda3 hatch and I love it. 5-speed, leather, navi... I should have bought it when I found it for her. 2004 28k miles "fully loaded" for $14k

Oh, sorry to hear of your experience. My father has an 06 530i sedan, and I also drove a 2003 530i sedan (granted they were not wagons) and I thought they had decent performance. Not a CL-S (and really not S4 material), but nothing near "slow" in my opinion. But then again, we each have our preferences.

As far as "If you don't like the Legacy/Outback, take a look at a Forester." I'm totally with you. I would consider a Legacy, but a forester, no WAY. to me that thing is ugly, boxy no refinement... If that was the ONLY wagon available on the market, and I needed a wangon, I'd buy a 4 door sedan, remove the trunk lid and rear window and put a tarp over it. and brace it to make it look like a wagon.

Best of luck with the wagon search, I'd 2nd the A6 Avant comment, but the 2.8L engine.. well, if you didn't like teh 530i, you're gonna puke on the 2.8, the 2.7t like my mother has is just NOT fuel efficient, I don't know if it's the quattro, or the gearing that make that stupid engine rev around 3500 rpm at 80mph or what, but I took it on a road trip once, and it was really not cheap, in gas. I did about 22mpg with cruise control at 80 to 85mph.

Best thing about the BMW is that what it lacks in horsepower, it makes up in smoothness. They make a sweet engine, thats for sure. The wagon probably weighs a few hundred pounds more than the sedan

I drove the A6 Avant in 2.8 and 3.0 versions, not a big difference, but I'd take the 3.0 out of the two. Now, and A6 Avant with a 2.7t swap would be a sweet sleeper wagon

WRX, or Forester if it has to be a wagon.

What type pf dog is it? My sister has a 100 lb Golden and she has an Altima and has never had a problem. Personally I would look into a 4 door sedan before wagons. It just gives you a lot more options.

That's a good point, I have a doberman weights about 105lbs or so, and he just lays in the back seat of a 4 door. I lay a sleeping bag below him that I tie up to the headrests and voila. I put some extra blankets on the bottom seat, so the bottom part of the seatbelt that sticks out further than the seat don't bother him, and he's good to go. He's actually much more comfortable on the back seat, than he was in the back of my old GrandCherokee.

Well the GTO is ugly, but you have one.

Beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder.

Do I think the Forester is the most stylish, attractive car? - Hell no. But if he's looking for something functional, reliable, and within a decent price-range, then it's another option to consider.

the GTO is ugly, I agree

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but do you really think the forester is better looking then the legacy and the outback (my comments were towards him saying he wouldn't get the Legacy or Outback beacuse those were ugly and you then recommending the forester)

I just did, and it's probably a pretty common thought overall. Cheap-looking and ugly, as are most Pontiac, Saturn, and Chevrolet cars, IMO.

Do *I* think the Forester is better looking than the Legacy? No way. But I actually like the look of the Legacy, whereas he doesn't. So who knows, maybe the Forester is more to his liking, and it would still be a great choice of car in his price range. Just trying to suggest alternatives, that's all. Sometimes it's worth overlooking some aspects of a car to get something out of it that you really want...in your case, overlooking the GTO's nasty appearance to get the engine you probably wanted. In his case, it would be in his price range, versatile, reliable, and AWD. Anyway, just another one to add to the list of possibilities. I know he won't get anything he doesn't like anyway.

So what your saying is, me buying a GTO is like marrying an ugly chick because she's incredible in the sack?

Oh no worries there. I wasn't even thinking that. I thought you were implying that about YOUR wife, hence why I steered clear of the topic!

Anyway, this thread is really about wagon suggestions. Back on track.

Don't look at me, I'd rather get the Legacy GT. I think it's a great looking car. But if I drove the Forester and really liked it, I'd consider it too.

i'm looking for a sedan but sporty. like what mattg has, which i really like and kicks ass, i really like the legacy GT and has a ton of potential and it is something you don't see everyday and can very unique. but being my age the WRX STI limited looks really nice and also has tons of potential and i would put the big wing on it. both would have to be black on black.

i say the legacy GT if you want modability and uniqueness.

but for a wow fctor the new BWM 335i is sweet.

but an S4 would be very nice too.
