I need a wagon

Hauling the dog around in the CL just isn't cutting it. Plus the CL really isn't great on gas and just isn't practical for doing anything other than driving with 2 people in the car.

I'm looking for a wagon which fits the following criteria:

No older than 2001
Used with <60k miles
Less than $17,000
Manual transmission
Somewhat fun to drive.

So far I'm thinking the WRX Wagon fits that criteria. Any other suggestions?

Mazda6 Sport. Ok it's not a wagon, but it's got a ridiculous amount of space behing the back seat. Take a look anyway at the 4-cyl 5M. O6's have a better interior. Our 05 4A sedan uses 9L/100km of regular, or less if my wife's driving. I had a 5M sedan doing 160kph on an off ramp, on a test drive - suddenly, the salesman wasn't taking.

Saab 9-5?
Your talking a real short list of cars that even come close to meeting the first 4 criteria, let alone satisfy all of them.

You can find S4 Avants that satisfy those conditions, but the possible maintenance on them might be a turn off.

Saab 9-2x! WRX wagon with luxury features for possibly even cheaper than the wrx since it's GM and massive rebates were involved

Subie FTW...

WRX, Forester, Outback... really doesn't matter as they are all decent... AWD would be a plus in the winter too...

If I had to buy a wagon, a subie would be my choice...

I know you all think it is a turd, but I think a Vibe would be cute. The GT is a 6spd!

True, but you can get a new one for only mid 30's. My guess would be that a used one might go for mid to high twenties. Once Chrysler starts to move its huge inventory backlog these things will only get cheaper.

After re-reading the original post I think that if the CL isn't great on gas the SRT-8 would be a nightmare.

Yea the 17K price point might be tough, Audi's are the best looking wagons to me.

Matrix > Vibe

I'm not sure if that's really the case, but it might be interesting to see what the used car values are on this since they are almost identical...

WRX or A4

If it was me, i would get the WRX since it would have much less miles for 17k.

WRX would be my first place choice because of the quality you get it in at 17k miles

versus

The Audi Allroad 2.7T altho a bigger nicer car it will have more miles / maintenance is a bit more pricey

Doesn't need to satisfy all of them I suppose.... but 4/5 would be nice... price is key though.

I did find a local one that has 50k miles and is listed for less than 19k at a dealership. However they are awful on gas from what I've read. Like 24 mpg on the highway and I believe they only came in automatic.

agreed with the majority. for all those criteria's you have listed the Subie is definitly the most reliable, best on gas, and alot more practical than what most others have listed.

subie FTW!

Matt I really don't like the look of the LGT Wagon. I thought it would grow on me but it just hasn't at all.

Matt I don't like the look from the rear.

Although now it looks like my ex is keeping the dog so maybe I don't need a wagon afterall. UGH

We'll see...

Passt Wagon with 4Motion, either a 1.8t or a W8, but I dont think the 8 comes in stick
2000-up Audi A6 Avant (no stick though) or A4 Avant (can be had with stick)
2000-up Subaru Legacy Outback
2000-up VW Jetta Wagon VR6
WRX Wagon, but they dont have that much room in the cargo area compared to the others.

I'm in the wagon market right now also becuase I hate SUVs and dont like big cars.

Something tells me that Legacy pictured above would smoke the shit out of a S4 Avant and do so costing much much less.

My mother has an A6, with the 2.7T engine. I drove it a few times when I go to visit them. Drives awsome, but fuel economy sucks!

that sub looks pretty sweet above btw.

My personal thing, I hate how the subaru's have no window frame on the doors.

as far as the Magnum suggested earlier, a neighbor has one, looks pretty bling, all black with huge chromed rims, but up close, it's the biggest, cheapest chunk of plastic.

Another suggestion, Volvo V70?

I've seen some older bmw 530 wagons, I thought they looked fantastic. But finding one newet than 01 costing less than 17k, I think won't happen.
I'm really biased towards BMW though, I've driven a few and I loved each one. (98 M3, 04 330i, 06 530i) and to me my CL feels like a shopping cart after driving a bmw.

I've been checking out teh BMW 530/540iT wagons and they can be had for pretty cheap actually. I've been seeing them for below 20k with pretty decent mileage. They drive like crap though since they are so underpowered. The 540 would be ideal, but the gas mileage sucks.
