i dont know if this belongs here

but I am looking for advice on purchasing a used car. anyways, here goes:

2001 Acura Integra GS
111k miles, silver, from pictures looks to be in very good condition.
he is asking $5200, but i was able to talk him down to $4500 (perhaps too quickly..)
he is the 4th owner, and presented a clean carfax report from just before he bought it in 2007 with 60k miles.
he said he recently did service at ~90k miles, said he recently bought new tires.

i will be moving to chicago in july, looking to leave the TL in oregon with family and drive the integra to chicago.

good deal? I can link the craigslist post if thats allowed.. thanks. (sorry mods if this is not allowed, didnt see guidelines for this forum)

you 100% need to get a carfax from recently. $10 or whatever for a carfax could save thousands later on if there's something majorly wrong with it

yeah ive never bought a carfax report, its like $30 something for a single report. i agree with what you are saying though.

also, he assures me the integra has never been modified, but who knows if there is truth to that.

based on kbb and nada, its a good price, but i guess im just asking would those of you with used car buying experience jump on this car quick or what?

carfax can be misleading due to backalley repairs but i still wouldnt purchase without it. definitely get a recent report!

also if you have any mechanically inclined friends then do a quick inspection before you buy it

Except I would make him supply a recent report and then I would have a mechanic check it over.

how much would a mechanic typically charge for this type of inspection? would it be better to take it to honda/acura service, or just a local shop?

thanks

Get recommendations for a local shop. Generally, a shop will the car a quick once over gratis in hopes you'll return to them for service. Or, they may charge for an hour of labor.

The question is, is the money spent worth the peace of mind? Spend a little now...or potentially spend a lot later.

carfax came back clean, but not very informative.. no accidents but no updates on service or anything with the current owner. oh well, better than nothing.

ill take your advice to heart, thanks sarlacc.

now, how about loan advice? credit union? ask for loan amount > car amount to put towards mods? lol jk..
