How many of you heard of General Tire before?

I'm currently in market for new tires, but wondering if you guys heard of General Tire (GT) before. My buddy works at Discount tire, and he recommend me to go with GT. I never heard of GT before, so I did little bit of researching and reviews on GT weren't bad at all.

I thought about getting Toyo Proxes. I noticed a lot members here were getting them, so thought they were good tires, but he said that, they are one of most overrated tires ever. He recommend me to go with either Bridestone, Goodyear, and GT.

I thought about getting all summer tires, but in Seattle, that might not be a good idea to run those tires on rain.

Let me know what other tires you guys recommend...

oh, my budget is $700-800.

thanks!!!

General Tires.....We have them on the TSX. Dan's written about them a few times in response to others asking about them as well. I know he's been pretty happy with them thus far, especially considering they were very reasonable in price. He'll have to give you more info.

I have Toyos on the TL...but nothing super fancy: TPT's. I've been happy with those as well, but they're prob not what you're looking for.

I have heard of them, but never had experience with them. I would guess they are decent tires since they have been around for a while. Try to find some reviews.

Yeah, he also told me that for the price, they are excellent tires.

I'm really leanning towards GT already.

I really appreciate it SS.

I did over at tirerack, and their reviews are better then some of those top notch brand tires...

I'm currently looking at Good year Eagle F1 All Season, but I'm scared that I might rub on those. They are bit wider than any other tires.

When you have 19", there aren't too many choices.

*edit*
I really need to start using that mult-quote option.

Yeah, for sure.

I think that's the exact same model, General Exclaim UHP.

235/35/19.

My budget is what is holding me back, if that wasn't the case then I would been all over other top brands.

^ I hear you on budget. I just had to fork over about $900 for new tires on my Pac. Got some Yokohama Parada Spec-X's and they ride really well. The factory Mich were like $1299 for a set.

Are you referring to GT tires http://www.gt-tires.com/ which stands for Gajah Tunggal not "general tire"

or are you referring to http://www.generaltire.com/

There is a huge difference and a lot of people get the shittier GT tires thinking they are General's, even though he is your buddy make sure you know exactly what your getting before you purchase.

I spent over a decade of my life in the tire industry, I am a big fan of the big brands, the catch is not every tire made by say Bridgestone, is a good tire, most are good, some are great, but there are a few bad apples in every companies line up. On the other hand companies like GT tires is made up entirely of bad apples and rely on consumer ignorance to survive. With that said reviews of tires online from consumers is some what laughable, coming from someone who was in my shoes. There is not a tire I sold that someone didn't claim was the best tire ever made, yet someone else would say the exact opposite of the same tire - who's right? The problem is so few have a lot of experience with various tires, of course when you replace an old worn tire, that was probably slightly out of balance and wore a little funny, any new tire is going to feel like a million bucks, so all of the sudden the old tire becomes a steaming pile of shit. On the same note, some tires just perform poorly on some vehicles and excel on others - I don't get it, I certainly didn't make up the rules but I learned there are no absolutes.

I HIGHLY recommend Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. I got a set of 275/40/17 all around $600. I previously had Goodyear F1 GS-D3s, which yes, were very wide, not to mention expensive. I can't guarantee that they won't rub, although the VUCs run somewhat narrow, but I guarantee you that you won't be disappointed with their performance in the $1000 and under street tire category.

I've drag raced in them, they take corners very well, ride smoother and quieter than my GS-D3s. And they cost 3/4s as much.... can't beat that. Not to take away from the Goodyears either.... they're great tires, but the Vredesteins are even better.

Here's some links. 240sx, G35, 350Z, 3-series, Vette/Z06 and F-Body guys like em.

I haven't had experience with General Tires or done much research on them. However, I've yet to hear someone say something bad about Vredestein's performance. Really hope that helps.

here, it clearly shows on their logo says "GT". I'm getting General Tire, not Gajah Tunggal. My buddy has been working at discount for a quite of long time, so he knows what's up. He won't sell me some junks.

Like I mentioned on orginal post, I'm not looking for summer/performance tires. I really did thought about getting Goodyear F1 GS-D3s as well, but I'm really trying to save money for my next wheels. My Work Meister s1 are coming in within 2weeks, so I'm trying to save up money on those.

+ another for the UHP's.

And General Tires are old school for me. I remember them back from when I was a little kid in the early 80's.

General Tires was purchased by Continental AG in the mid 80's.

Although I don't think General Tires ever really excelled in anything, they were always good bang for the buck in my eyes.

I have general exclaim uhp tires. for only about 80 a piece, their pretty decent. Got only 30,000 miles out of them though. (basically 2 summers worth of 15,000 miles each.

Too quick i'd say but then again i drove alot on them, real grippy fun to do turns, but i always were afraid of the thin sidewalls.

They are xl load tires though.

Now running goodyear f1 all seasons the specs on tire rack is that
gen uhp 21 lbs for a 240 40 18
goodyear f1 26 lbs for the same tires.
both xl loaded but i feel the goodyears are better wear so far and plus their all season i should expect to see 50,000 miles.

I have always sworn by Toyo's, and still do; however, I've heard nothing but good things about the UHP's from members here and from reading reviews on Tire Rack and 1010Tires. I had always thought of Generals as crappy tires, but it seems, at least with the UHP's, that they have improved. I have no problem re-evaluating my position on something given new information. When I get new tires, I will be getting the UHP's. A set of GS-D3's would be nice, but they are way too pricey.

Tirerack classifies them as Summer's but they are rated as a M+S. Not that I'd attempt driving on them in the winter.

Right off their website...

The ultra-high performance you need in all season conditions. This tire features a silica compound for remarkable traction and mileage.

I called General about that before I got them. They said they were summer only tires. They warned to not drive in very cold temps & snow.

To be classified as an "all season" tire the requirements are minimal, most every tire produced for use on public roads qualifies. A number of years ago they came up with a new standard, its called the mountain snow flake pictograph it is the new standard to determine if a tire is capable of performing in winter(a true all season should), if your tire does not have this symbol on it, it is not designed for use in winter driving conditions. Here's what it looks like:

I think you got it all mixed up, dom.

Tirerack website clearly shows that they are high performance summer tires, but my buddy did mentioned that one of his friend ran those tires whole season without any problem. This was in Seattle, where it doesn't snow as much during the winter season.

The quote I posted was from General's website, not Tirerack's.

http://www.generaltire.com/tires/T1/Exclaim-UHP

But like I said and timmy mentioned. Its more of a technicality. No way I would attempt driving them in snow.

I have the General Exclaim UHP's on my 06 Si. I love them. I am sure there are better tires out there, but I promise you will not find anything as good for anywhere near the price. I have about 5k miles on mine and they replaced my stock michelin mxm4's which were terrible. I was looking for something that was definitely calm on the interstate, but would grip well around town and I wasn't looking to pay much.
I believe general is actually owned by continental. I did tons of research before I got my tires on and I remember reading that somewhere. And I checked the DOT code on my tires a few months ago and they were made at the continental plant in france.
As of now, when ever these tires wear out down the road I plan on buying another set of general exclaim UHPs
