How many people out there do you think that Acura are not made by Honda
I was watching the show "Cash Cab" which is a show that unsuspecting people entering a cab gets questions asked by the driver. THey have to try to answer as many questions as possible before they reach their destination. 3 wrong answers and they get booted from the cab.
This one episode the question was something on the lines of...
"This luxury brand from Honda has an "A" caliper for its logo, and prompted Toyota to create Lexus"
The couple didn't know and had to ask a pedestrian (like a lifeline)
Pedestrian was asked the same question and he was like "uhh... hmm... A... Accord?"

you know, I dont look at my TL like a fancy accord, it looks and feels so much different, I think Acura should be its own company not a honda luxury brand.

to the OP question:
i think a lot of people don't have any idea that honda and acura are related. just like toyota and lexus, nissan and infiniti, dodge and chrysler, VW and audi, GM and chevy...those are the same people that most likely treat their cars like appliances, go from point A to point B, ding a nice car, not give a damn and wash it once a year.
its like the people in jay walking on leno...really?? people are that clueless? wow...that's scary. but they're out there.

Lexus does the same thing as does Infinity. They're just better at differentiating between their luxury brands. Most people know an Acura is a Honda. Most don't know Lexus is a Toyota and Infinity is a Nissan. I'm not sure why, I've mistaken a Camry for a Lexus ES and an ES for a Camry at first glance. Check out a Camry with all of the options and put it next to an ES. I would be pissed if I paid the money for an ES to have it look so similar to a Camry. There's little chance of mistaking a TL for an Accord.
When I say most people I'm talking about car people. I've called my car a glorified Accord at work and they look at me with a blank look and are usually surprised to learn it's a Honda.

Acura might be the luxury of HONDA but when it comes to the TL 3rd gen. Doesnt even feel, look or drive like an Accord. Now the TSX is basically Identical. I owned a 2006 Accord and my fiance owns a 2006 TSX and its basically identical, Now I have a 2007 TL and by far the funnest car I drove and has never made me feel like Im driving an Accord. While in the other hand Lexus ES and camry have more similarity like tsx and accord, but its not fair to say a TL is also like an Accord. It would be like saying Lexus IS300 is like a corolla or even a camry. (no comparison) so out of all the Acura's I would say that TL is in a different category on its own.

Cash Cab (I believe) takes place in NYC. Most New Yorkers would struggle to differentiate between a Lexus and a Chevrolet.
That said, New Yorkers shouldn't be used as a benchmark in determining how much of the populace may be aware of Acura's relationship with Honda Motors. In NYC, cars are simply a transportation alternative to the subway, bus or a pair of Nikes.
As for the TSX reference earlier: The TSX is simply a Euro Honda Accord dressed in Acura badging and available with an optional V6.

Most people don't have an interest in cars. I remember a BMW exec saying that 80% of 1-series owners thought their car was FWD.

I've gotten the "fancy Honda" remark before also...it really is a fancy Accord. As is a Lexus ES to a Toyota Camry. But I enjoy the fact that I can go to the Honda dealer nearby for certain parts rather than going to my Acura dealer.
I'm sure people would struggle with the Infiniti to Nissan relationship also. My dads GF has an Infiniti and had no idea her car was made by Nissan up until recently.

And just plain uneducated.
People are confusing the way certain domestic marques have "twin" cars...where the vehicles are the exact same under the sheet metal. The Ford Taurus and the Mercury Sable were twins...the exact same car under the aesthetic differences.
Then you have different cars built off the same architecture. The 1st gen G35 Coupe is a longer version of the 350Z chassis. I cant speak for the G37 Coupe, because Im not so sure the 370Z chassis was adapted for it or not.

IMO the TL is a much nicer Accord, but almost everything the average person sees, and touches is nicer in the TL. But hey, my dash is still in one piece, so no complaints.
I find that most people know Acura as a Honda brand, but not as many know that Lexus is part of Toyota, or Infiniti with Nissan. People in NYC are just stupid.

Never any worries on this one: Honda took what was and still is (IMHO) THE benchmark family sedan (sorry Hyundai/Kia fans) and further enhanced the setup in developing both a solid sports sedan in the TL and a competent luxury sedan with the RL.
That said, I don't think automakers care whether or not the car buying public is aware of the lineage of Lexus, Acura and Infiniti.....so long as they are regarded as upscale and desirable.
If anything, people like me probably annoy the parent companies most as I comparison-shopped the 07 TL base versus the 07 AV6 EX-L sedan prior to purchasing the latter, where my Honda purchase cannibalized a potential Acura sale. (Of course I made that up to Acura when I traded the Accord for a new MDX.)

Eh, who cares. They probably think Acuras are a USDM company, too & don't realize that out of the 3 current "muscle" cars, only the Mustang is built in the US.
These are the people who'd shit bricks if they learned what kind of parts used to be in Aston Martins.

now i dont' understand why we are even saying the TL is a fancy accord. isn't that what the TSX is? a rebadged euro accord?? like the tsx wagon, is a rebadged accord wagon?? have you driven a 4cyl TSX?? it drives like a 4cyl accord (which is the majority of them). now the 6cyl might be similar to a TL as far as the engine is concerned, but it seems the TL was designed to be a sports sedan all in itself with no "honda" equivalent.
so are some of you going to tell me the 4G TL or a 3G TL is a "fancy accord"?? i'll need more convincing.

They are based off of the same platforms so therefore to some who would like to take away any uniqueness to the TL will call it a glorified Accord.

Let me rephrase my statement since some of your are struggling. An Acura TL is just a fancy USDM Honda Accord.
Yes the TSX here is an Accord elsewhere, but the TL is based off of the USDM Accord.
Are all of the parts exactly the same? No. Do they look exactly the same? No. Are they similar? Yes.

FWIW the TSX isn't that different than the USDM Accord. Accord guys like to pick off stuff from both the TL and TSX. So if you really wanna get technical the TL is a fancy version of the USDM Accord which is a bigger version of the Euro Accord which is almost exactly like the TSX.
