How to get into Nascar?

How to get into Nascar?
I have the Speed Channel on my Dish Satellite and well I'm getting bored with watching the same American sports all the time and would like to start a new hobby of watching Nascar.
My question is how? Is there something I am missing what is the big deal about watching cars go round and round? Is there an insiders club to this because so many people have no clue what the sport is about.
Its feels and looks like a giant clique.
But being a well rounded guy I would like to be a Nascar fan but please offer me some hints on how to do this.

I could never really get into watching NASCAR. A long time ago when the cars were more representative of what you can get in a showroom it was fun and you could identify with the cars and the drivers. Today Nascar has lost that connection to the real world, plus once you could see real developments in NASCAR that spilled into the world of everyday automobiles. Today NASCAR shows you some outline of some car that is not really available anywhere. Nothing really to identify with. Seems to me NASCAR got stuck in the sixties and pretty much other than developments on the safety front nothing much has changed. Carburetors, live axles etc etc. boooooooring !!

Crashes. Everyone wants to see crashes. I went to the Daytona 500 a few years ago. I was dragged by some friends & it was free. All I heard were people saying they wanted to see crashes. I will say there is some excitement if your at a race cause the roar of the cars the smell of fuel, & the fact that cars are doing 180+mph all combine to give you a bit of a rush.
But I could never watch on TV, even in HD. It's so boring!

Here is what you do.
First of all, ignore all negative NASCAR BS like "its pro-wrestling on wheels" and other stupid remarks like that. Then, set aside some time and go here:
http://www.skagitspeedway.com/
Assuming you're in Seattle as your profile says, of course.
Skagit speedway has excellent local oval track racing. Its a famous old track with high quality competitors and events. Go there and watch sprint cars for a couple of nights.
This is the type of racing that is the 'minor leagues' to NASCAR Nextel Cup. Its awesome stuff and the 410c.i. sprint cars carry one of the biggest power to weight ratios of any racing series in the world. But hey, don't take it from me, see what local boy Kasey Kahne has to say about it.

Hey, ANY sport can be boring to watch on TV if you haven't seen it in person. Golf, basketball, baseball, it doesn't matter.
Seriously, I highly recommend doing this. Its the easiest way to fast-forward an understanding of NASCAR. If you're interest continues, then make a trip to California Speedway in September and watch the Nextel Cup cars go by you at 200mph. See ya there.

I couldn't tell you how to get into it if you aren't already. Really I wouldn't go all out and try to get into everything - just put the race on the TV every Sunday and follow it week to week. Once you learn who the drivers are and all the different teams, then you can find someone to root for and follow them closer.
I myself like hearing about the off-track shenanigans, the drama with team mates, who Tony Stewart got angry at this week, etc.
If you really need some reference material Mark Martin wrote NASCAR for Dummies, which is a decent read, explains a lot of the details you may not notice as a casual viewer. Might be out of date at this point though.

It's really only the last 10 laps of the race that are exciting. Other than that, it's all pretty boring..
it's also hilarious to hear the commentators get extremely excited about the most mundane boring things.

Even tho I doubt golf will be any more exciting in person unless you fully know what's going on but I'm only into baseball if I'm there in person with a bag o' peanuts but any sport can really be annoying/boring, like Football = Life for me, and I dont get how people (guys too) can not be tottaly into it, I've played football for forever and I tottaly understand every little movement and watch every step of what's happening so the most boring things that goes on seems very exciting to me. I'm pretty sure it goes for NASCAR too, unless you're really intune to what's going on with every turn you'd be bored outta your mind, i'm sure they're others like me and baseball and basically any other sport that I don't play (I play football, wrestle, and throw shot, the latter two sports being VERY boring to watch in person and on tv, unless you actually fully understand them) I happen to not understand which makes them boooring, even some of my friends (who happen to play golf) find golf the greatest thing in the world to watch and watch it like how I watch football (jumping around hooting and hollering n such), just my

It's just like any other sport. If you don't know much about the players or the teams it would be boring. Try keeping up some of the news stories on Nascar.com and speedtv.com (go to the forums section). The boards on speedtv are just like this one only people talk about nascar and the drivers. Pick a driver and follow his stats for the rest of the year and you will become a fan. Good luck!
