Honda's stagnation.
Honda's stagnation.
In the recent years it appears that Honda survives solely based on its past reputation and on the innovations it developed years ago. The iconic models that brought enthusiasts into Honda's showrooms are all but gone; few that remain are far from being the top performers.
Case and point- Civic SI. In 1989 the Si was a ground breaking hot hatch, 160HP and DOHC VTEC motor (JDM market) made the car an enthusiasts' dream. The car could do 0-60 in 7 seconds, and run a quarter mile in 15 seconds. VTEC was a tremendous innovation from Honda, and whole concept of the SI made it a huge success. Now, come 2012...the SI makes JUST 200HP, it made the same HP amount for 10 years now. It has VTEC, but every other auto maker in business has nearly identical system. Si does not have DI, FI, or anything that would remotely indicate that the car is at the forefront of the automotive engineering. For comparison, ford Focus ST will be delivering 250HP from its 2.0T motor.
Hyundai and Kia are now offering more powerful and more advanced models than Honda. Kia Optima offers 2.0T 274HP engine. Top of the line Accord it still sticking to the 3.5 V6 VTEC motor that makes 278HP.
Acura brand as a whole is struggling to find its niche in US. I feel that Acura is becoming a Japanese version of Buick or Oldsmobile. Acura is not as luxurious as Lexus or Infiniti, nor is it as sporty as BMW. Just as Buick was a more luxurious Chevy during the 1990s, Acura is becoming a more luxurious Honda.
Honda's management appears to be completely impotent when it comes to developing the brand and keeping the HMC at the forefront of the engineering curve. You can ride on the past successes for only a brief period of time before the inevitable happens. There are plenty of auto makers now that offer more powerful and better equipped models that are just as reliable as Honda's products, so once the die-hard Honda brand loyalists are gone- shit will hit the fan.

Agree.
No offense meant to the OP, but 2009 called and they want their thread back.
If you search, OP, you will find that we have discussed this for several years and now Honda/Acura have finally started the long trek back to relevance.

The engine fitted was the D16A6 16-valve SOHC with 4-point injection and output of 108 hp (81 kW). It weighed in at 2,286 lb (1,037 kg), achieving a factory 0–60 mph of 8.1 seconds; and a quarter-mile time of 16.2 at 82 mph (132 km/h).[3]
wow 2200 pounds. it's sad that a bare bones civic now weighs 2800 lbs.
The closest thing to that now is a honda fit that weighs close to 2500 lbs, similar engine (SOHC, i-vtec etc), similar acceleration numbers, and probably similar fuel economy numbers.

As I said, JDM only. MTEAZY, your opinion is obviously very important to me. I will have my secretary IM you on Monday to take down the list of complaints you have about my car and she will take down your address for a complimentary pack of tampons you get for expressing your opinion.

But there was more to come, and in late 1989 the new top model of the hatchback was the new SiR, fitted with the 1.6-litre, 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 7,600 rpm "B16A" DOHC VTEC engine. This, the first B engine, marked the introduction of Honda's variable valve timing and electronic lift control technology, or VTEC

I am working today. Getting the 2.5x pay to work on MLK, will be home at 8PM with extra $1,000.00 for showing up. So sure as hell working the OT.
Mteazy, not feeding your childish trolling. But I do appreciate you promoting my car; it is the only Bedlined TL in existence; lifted and painted to take me to all of AZ attractions; attractions that often have unpaved roads. If you can add the picture and link to my paint thread to your signature, I would definitely appreciate that.

That combined with the way the thread is heading based on replies...
