honda odyssey or toyota sienna for the in-laws
I think i may have persuade my inlaws to buy a used 06+ odyssey or sienna instead of some pos kia minivan.
They are looking for one under 16k and i know after searching that it can be done. They even can get a certified one with decently low miles.
Are there any real problem areas that they need to consider?
My inlaws know nothing about cars. They saw a murano and i told them to run b/c of the cvt trans.

As an Oddy owner, don't get anything past '06....they have plenty of problems.
...but then again so does my '06....but I dodged the Honda tranny bullet....'07 & up have tranny issues (they changed the tranny in '07)......ask dom.
My Oddy issues: Power steering pump, automatic door issues, rattles, tire eater, front brake eater.
If I had to make the choice you are making, I'd get the Sienna.
My sister has an '06 Sienna....compared to my Oddy, it's like night and day.
The Toyota is virtually trouble free.

I shoot people
they say for the first time in like... forever... the Sienna didn't get a "recommended buy" or whatever it's call from CR... but I don't care... I think the Sienna is the best looking mini-van out

I had an 08 Odyssey and was somewhat deceived. Notable issues were the damn brake pedal that kept feeling spongy even after the TSB, and the automatic doors although that only occured once. I must say that we did go through TWO sets of brake pads until I decided to get rid of it around 19k miles. Build quality ( Rattled a lot and had excessive wind noise imo) and dealer service wasn't exactly the best imho.
If I had to make the choice again, although the Odyssey was more fun to drive, I'd look for an XLE Sienna.

My 07 has had tranny issues since day 1. 2 software updates and a new torque converter followed by yet another software update and the issue is still there. The issue is all over the Odyclub forums so I'm hardly alone in experiencing it.
I've also has the power steering pump and reservoir replaced and both rear wheel bearings. More common problems according to the Ody forums. All in almost 3 years of ownership. Add eating tires and brakes and there's no way I would recommend an Ody.
Then again a co-worker had a 06 which has been pretty much problem free.

...and the road noise at hwy speed in the Oddy is HORRIBLE.
I dunno what it's like in the Toyota, however.

I know someone who is on their 3rd Kia Sedona (upgraded every 2-3 years) and they love it. Said it drives like a car, so they keep trading it in for another. I've ridden in it a lot but haven't driven it. It's definitely smaller than the Honda or Toyota -- not nearly as wide or as long. Of course, it doesn't look as up-to-date or technologically advanced as the Ody or Sienna, but....? Could probably get a new one for their budget.
Disclaimer: Don't blame me if they hate it.

I know your looking at newer model years, but my dad has an '02 Sienna with 150,000 miles. Got it with 30K miles. No problems other than the AC needing a recharge.
I gotta say though, after this whole ordeal with my moms camry, they need to be careful. Certificated-preowned status is applied by the dealer, which can be a good and bad thing.

2016 Acura TLX
Well I'm gonna back up the Odyssey since my dad has an '00 with absolutely no problems at all. We bought it with 5 miles and it now has 130k miles. Only thing that's been replaced was the egr sensor which was under warranty. Seriously though, this thing is bullet proof, no tranny issues (knock on wood), not even a burnt out light bulb. We'll be upgrading to the 2012 Odyssey soon.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
My Odyssey is a 2001, and the 4speed AT does suck, but it works. But I have a JDM model. A bit different.

Yep - new ones. I think she tends to keep (lease?) them for 2-3 years and when it's time to get a new van, she just gets another Sedona. Loves them.

Edmunds did a comparison test on the 2006 mini-vans. My sister-in-law has a 2008 Sienna and has had no problems. Likewise there are handful of 3G Odysseys in my neighborhood. We know a couple owners very well and both have had also no problems with their Ody's.
