High mileage jeep?
I'm thinking about getting something with 4wd for the winters. Would this be possible with a budget of ~$3000? say, 150k-200k mile jeep grand cheeroke? Or do the cars just fall apart after so many miles? I just need it for the days with really bad weather

my mom sold hers with 180k on it....ran/drove like a champ. If you can get your hands on one that has been properly maintained, you'll be golden. The interior/drivetrain/electronics all held well. Nothing major went wrong other than a prob. with the A/C, but thats pretty common on them.

I agree. As long as you have full maintenance records and the vehicle has been methodically maintained you should get a few more miles from a high mileage vehicle. It may not be as screwed down as a new vehicle, but if you can find one for a decent price it may serve you well. I'd do a compression test and make sure the transfer case and the rest of drivetrain works well however.

We have a family friend who bought a Grand Cherokee with 150K on it. If he wasn't a retard it may have been fine. I remember pushing it up my hill int he winter cause the 4WD wasn't working. I said his transfer case was broken, he told me the guy who sold it to him told him but he didn't know what it was. The thing was also losing oil like a champ. He decided to buy a sound system instead of replacing a crank seal and he ran out of oil a few months ago...
Thats my limited experience with old jeeps. We got some high mileage ones in the auto shop at school. Wheels fused to hubs, heater core solenoids shattered, but none of those had any apparent engine flaws.

Go to www.jeepforums.com and ask those guys. They're all a bunch of straight shooters.

My family still owns a '93 Grand Cherokee with 230K miles on it. It isn't daily driven anymore, just around the yard or when there is snow on the ground but it still runs very well for a car of its age and milage.

For a car with 150k-200k miles, you cant be uptight about maintenance records and things that are not working right. If you are going to be looking at things like that, then up your budget by a few grand and get a younger one. But with 3 grand i know you can get a grand cherokee with a little under 100k miles. I have an 89 cherokee in the family that runs strong as shit and is daily driven. Grand cherokees have more electrical gremlins, but they are solid overall. For a car with over 100,000 miles, i say take it to a mechanic and let them check it out for you.
