Usually when you hear that about a Corvette its modded to the teeth, huge cam, heads, spraying, etc. BUT they forgot to upgrade something important in the process.
And fuel mileage is pretty moot with these cars. A C5 Vette won't be far off in terms of mileage especially if you do a lot of highway driving... in fact it may even be better than the S2000 - around 26mpg is what I hear from people I know personally about the S2k
I don't know if you'll mind but the S2000 is a pretty raucous car to drive. It all depends if you like the sound or not, I happen to love it. But IMO the Corvette sounds even better. Do what they always say.... take a long test drive of each back to back and see what you could see yourself driving around in everyday. You really can't go wrong with the S2000 or C5. The GTO on the other hand is a great choice IF you sell your RL and get a 'tweener,' as in a car that is the best of both worlds.

IMHO, a weekend "midlife crisis" car should be some kind of roadster/convertible. My pick would probably be the S2000. But, a few other options I figured I'd toss out that I haven't seen mentioned:
E36 M Roadster or Coupe
E36 M3 Convertible or Coupe
Mustang GT Convertible or Coupe

Get an s2000 and get the rotrex supercharger when it comes out. Great car and great power, plus honda reliablility and insurance will be cheaper.
BUT also look at a NA1 NSX, they can cost about 25K for a 91 with 100K, but the NSX can last more than 500,000 miles.

I parked next to a BMW Z4 roadster in the physicians' lot at one of the hospitals I go to today. Nice car. The E36 M3 has been mentioned before in this thread. I may look into it. I've driven, but not owned BMWs, and find the old slogan "the ultimate driving machine" to be totally true.
I refuse to consider a Mustang. Too many of them on the road. Not as many 'vettes, and even fewer S2ks.
BTW, what's the best S2k site?

My unofficial tally of our forum's braintrust so far:
S2k 18 (feels really, really good....)
Corvette 10 (nothing like low-end torque, which as a longtime Honda/Acura owner I have not experienced in ownership)
Boxster 3 (too slow)
E36 M3 2 (plan to test drive)
Z4 1 Nah.
NSX 2 wish I could get one cheaper.
Miata 2
GTI 1 Interesting suggestion, will have to drive one
Civic S1 1
Oh man, it's going to be an exciting few weeks while I have fun test driving. I failed to mention that I haven't driven stick in ten years and I really want to get back into it. I'll have to start test driving with the S2k as Honda MTs are the easiest to use, and that's those are the only MTs I've experienced.

I like the TT a lot. The 225 Quattro Vert would be a fun car IMO.
I think I might take a Stook first though if the money were the same.

woooo!!
You don't buy an S for it's 0-60 time... it is definitely not built as a drag racer/straight line acceleration.
You buy it for the top down, high-revving, amazingly precise handling and pure driving pleasure/experience. Test drive one (if you haven't already) and it should all make sense!!
PS: I absolutely love my S.

I said it in my first post and I'll say it again, since the OP didn't include it in his final tally. If you're considering an S2000, Boxster, or Z4, I'd give the E36 M Roadster and/or coupe a test drive as well.

you can get a prev-gen M3 Roadster for $20k?

NOW I understand why people love the S2k
I just test drove an S2k AP1 about an hour ago.
That is a NICE ride. The shifter is super-easy to use. It didn't feel like I hadn't driven a MT in almost ten years, I felt like a pro.
It's loud and there's lots of wind noise with the top closed (duh), but that's part of the experience and it makes you feel like you're part of the car. The handling is fscking telepathic. I probably won't get this particular S2k (I got the "deal pending" from the salesman even though I offered a major down payment), but that makes it more likely that I'll get one. I still need to try the MT Corvette, though. After this test drive, I probably won't consider an AT at all on a new toy sports car.

IMHO: i've said this and i'll say this again The Z4 M is probably the most impressive car in this catagory. runs 13.3s bone stock 0-60 in 4.5
which is equal to a 01 Z06 Vette. has 2 less cylinders and about 70 less hp.
the fastest STOCK(notice i put stock in BIG LETTERS) S2K i've seen ran was a 14 second 1/4 and 0-60 in 5.5.
also that Z4 M will run even with a SRT-8 Charger.
