Holy jesus. Make up your mind and do whatever you want.

Honestly don't know why you made this topic asking for others' opinion when you aren't even going to bother with them.

going to test out the street parking with a friends car for a few days. or scope out the area for a week or two.

one side street sweepers no parking for 90 min window 11am-12:30pm (Mon/Weds), and the other side is the same time (Thurs/Fri). We both would not be home for lunch to switch sides. We are usually out for work at 8 and back at 10 or 11. Which means we would need to switch sides at 10/11pm at night, two or three times a week. nobody is moving spots at the time, so you are stuck cherry picking spots that others cant fit into. hence the MINI. i would also be the designator spot switcher, cuz she could barely drive, let alone drive. this is would be my toy.

garages go for 1,200 (central park east) to 800/mo (UES) to 500/mo (Yorkville) to 300/mo (open air in harlem). and there are waiting lists for all of them. i would never consider any of those options. so it all comes down to street parking.
And I can't believe you are seriously willing to go through that shit everyday just to drive around that Mini in the NYC traffic.

If you can't afford a place with your personal garage or parking spot in NYC, you aren't rich enough to have a car, especially just as your "toy".

Go with the subway.

Standard thread.

Ask question with mind already made up, talk about how expensive NYC/Miami is, throw in IS comment for good measure, then do nothing.

thats why i started the thread with the question of what car, not should i park in nyc....luckily, i got a page worth or responses before the thread went sideways with nyc bashing per usual. clearly you would be against parking in nyc if you didnt live here...its my problem, not yours...im only looking for advice on what type of car. for those that were helpful, thank you.

off for test drives today with some of the conteders discussed. lot searching and free L.I.C. parking continues.

Veloster Turbo
That's what I was going to suggest. My grand ma has the base auto version, which is SLOW, but it's pretty much identical to the turbo without the better engine.

Having lived in NYC & dealing with the parking & the street cleaning & the winters & the morons that bump into you parking...I'd get a used beater truck/SUV & put big tires on it.

went to some dealers today...some have alliances with chain parking facilities and will offer me a package deal on discounted monthly parking with a lease deal. they said this has become the main selling point for them to place people in cars, more so than the cost of the lease itself. cuz, truthfully going tick for tack on a lease deal is not as meaningful when they could get you 50% on monthly parking, or at the least, they said they could waive the monthly parking tax, which is 18.375%. hopefully, it pans out within a reasonable cost of ownership.

Brooklyn leasing brokers (shoofin type places) are able to undercut dealers by 100+ month on average...maybe mostly due to the absence of the overhead of stocking inventory. then again, dealers were open to price match brokers if willing to enter into a monthly parking program.

for what its worth, if I wanted a car I didn't give a shit about, id continue to use a hertz on demand / zip car, which is falling apart and smells like cigarettes and/or pot.

Is that a challenge to see if I will accept? I have no clue what the hell we would talk about in person...but if you want to try and get a beer late Sat night...feel free to PM your number and I'll try and make it happen. I'll be way out in BFE visiting Sly Raskal during the day.

test drove the Q50 this afternoon bc I was in dealer row...for kicks...holy smokes...

what a value! if any of you guys are looking in this segment, I highly suggest. leasing brokers are offering the loyalty pricing at $299/mo, nothing down, which will get you a premium package with back up camera, dual screen dash, sunroof, 10 speaker bose stereo etc. base model is 5.2 sec 0-60, which puts this at IS350 territory at a size in between the GS/IS. fit and finish was very good for the price.

Loyalty pricing...meaning you need to have a current Infiniti to qualify. No Infiniti, no loyalty. They make up loyalty, effectively committing fraud...noooo thank you.

...Also, the Q50 really is a great deal, but the reviews on it are horrible. I'm about done with my G37 lease and didn't go with a Q50, even with the $3,250 loyalty incentive that I do qualify for, I was thinking with more efficiency in mind, which is why I replaced it with this:

It's a hatch, it's fuel efficient, it's relatively fun to drive, and can be had in the 3's.

As for Mini, Forget about the Countryman or Paceman. The only one that will be in your range is a base model Cooper Hardtop, not even an S.

How about a Subaru Impreza hatch?

thanks, shoof. That is actually what the fiancé wants. out of all of our searching, that is where we wound up..we spent a bit of time in the CT last weekend, and the brochure was the only one we brought home.

lexus manhattan couldn't beat the leasing broker, but I got them to match. they came down from $299/mo, $4k down to $269/mo TTL (~$1,800). they also teed up discounted parking at $280/mo all in (near me) at an icon garage, which advertises at $400/mo with 18% tax. so all around, they hooked it up...relatively speaking...

overall, loved the CT, but the acceleration was dangerously slow. hopped it, floored it, and nothing happened. 0-60 in 9..8 seconds. not only that, but there is no control over any of the gears. I was nervous just merging onto the henry hudson.

does the acceleration create any real world problems? are you ever caught in difficult situations with the power?

shoof, few more things, if you don't mind:

1. does sport mode make that big of a difference?
2. what mode do you generally find yourself driving in?
3. does lexus offer 5,000 or 7,500/mi leases? Or should I pay he extra few bucks a month on the 10,000 lease, and end up in a better position selling/buying lease note near lease expiration.

thanks, buddy

If you're really leaning towards the CT, let me know, I might be able to do something.

To answer your questions:
1 & 2: The CT is really for my driver. I did drive the car for the first week that we got it so I can get a feel for it. I kept the car in the standard mode majority of the time, occasionally switching it to regen brake mode, eco mode and sport. I like it. The highest mpg reading I got was averaging close to 42, but that was it. I believe it's rated for like 43/41 or something, which it easily will do if you don't drive it like you stole it..I would drive it daily...I'm not so much of a tree hugger, but I am conscious of the MPG's, so I drove it while trying to take advantage of the benefits of having a fuel efficient car. The Eco mode dumbs down throttle response. The Sport mode seems to add a little more pep, I don't know if it's throttle response or it's allowing the engine to use more power/energy, don't know, but you definitely notice a difference. Coming from the G37 that I got him before this, he hates the lack of power, and he leaves it in Sport all the time. It definitely has an effect on the mpg's, I will say that much. As far as passing power, it's not bad, but you may need to time your passing a little sooner to insure you don't collide with the other aggressive NYC drivers. The difference really isn't all that noticeable if you know how to drive...

3: No, 10k or more only.

This thread should be locked. I think we all know OP doesn't care what we have to say. Seriously, whats the point of leasing a new car that's clearly going to be beat to shit by NYC conditions?

My last post comes from my own personal opinion rather than that of a moderator. Hence, I'm not inclined to lock this thread. That said, there's just no need to own or lease a car while living in NYC.

Besides, I've witnessed how badly NYC drivers are when traveling outside NYC. (i.e.: 50 mph in the left lane of the NJ Turnpike.) So I highly encourage NYC drivers to seek alternate means of interstate travel.

Love the Lex shoof and I would think it would be a great choice minus it is a bit bigger when it comes to parking. If you are paying for a spot, that should be ok but man those things are slow

If its anything like Chicago then you will most likely have to save some money on the side to get your front and rear bumpers repainted before turning in the lease. Or get charged up the waaazooo for it.

I like everyone suggestions already. Also did you look at the Golf TDI yet? Its leasing out around what you looking to spend.

Did you already buy tons of plastidip for the next car yet?

I quite like the Veloster as far as hatches that are actually usable are concerned. Today I saw a new Genesis coupe on the road and remembered how sexy those things are for the money as well...

lol, that is the the dumbest argument you could have come up with. So what if there's bad drivers everywhere if your city has literally THE WORST DRIVERS OUT OF EVERY SINGLE CITY in the entire country. Its statistically the worst possible place to own a car. Stop being a bone head and just admit your wrong based on facts, and quit holding on to a random opinion that you haven't and can't even explained properly.

All of these sites are as up to date as within the last 6 months, and suggest otherwise. Amazingly, Chicago doesn't have the best drivers, say it 'aint so!

When did I ever say Chicago has good drivers? Chicago has a lot of horrible drivers (I've seen a lot first hand), but if you're going to tell me NY's drivers are any better (where there's EVEN MORE TRAFFIC AND CONGESTION then Chicago) I'll laugh at your stupidity. So you can stick your head back up your ass because you still haven't made any valid argument as to why owning/leasing a new car in New York is a good idea, you just keep circling in a pool of stupid.

^ This is kind of a lost battle. You're trying to convince car dealer to suggest leasing a car is pointless. He makes money finding leases for people. It's like asking a financial investor to tell potential clients that investing money in the stock market is a horrible idea.
