Help me decide x5/x6

Hey guys,

New to this forum here names Andy.....seeking some advice I'm looking to buy either an X5 or an X6, the 50I model....Before I go and test drive them both I was looking to get opinions from anybody here that has one or has driven them. Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference in how the x5 and x6 drive? I know I'm probably crazy for liking the X6 as so many seem to flame it but I love, but also love the X5 to thats why I'm so torn between the two...also my biggest question is does the X6 give that feeling of sitting up high because I haven't really heard that addressed in any review yet.

Thanks for your time

Well...it depends on the amount of room you need. The X6-seats 4, not that much cargo space for an SUV, but it isn't really "cramped" The X5-seats 7 (3rd row?) and has a fairer amount of cargo spacer. Then again the X6 is way more fun to drive...

I really don't need much cargo space, and even if I do go for the X5 I wouldn't go for the 3rd row option as no one could comfortably sit in those seats anyway, and I don't really ever have any situations where its more then just me +3.

I like the X6 more. It's about as useful as a broken condom, but I like it.

Welcome to Acurazine Andy!

I've driven the X5 (new body but with the old motor) 4.8i and was mightily impressed. It had the Sport Package and it handled a lot better than what I had imagined. If it weren't for the minuscule third row seats I would have bought it over my Q7.

As for the X6, the looks are definitely not for everyones taste, but you like it and that's all that matters. I used to hate the looks but it has entirely grown on me, to a point where I'd seriously consider it. I imagine it having less headroom than the 5 due to the roofline design but best is to take a buddy with you and seat behind you with your seat adjusted.

P.S The X5/X6 look ridiculously mean with the super fat tires they wear on the Oversized wheels package( or whatever it's called)

Thanks for all the responses guys...I did actually drive a friends 07 X5 about 2 years ago, but it was the 3.0I which felt very underpowered but I fell in love with interior/exterior and high seating postion and I'm sure with the 50I model it wont feel slow, plus I have heard the interior is even more improved. On a side-note though does anyone know why the X6 which appears to be alot smaller than the X5 still comes in at almost 5300 lbs?

i love the X6 exterior with an obsession, however, the interior is extremely claustrophobic for its size due to lack of visibility.

X5 is everywhere. I rather have the X6 and stand out a little. They drive almost the same.

I doubt there's much difference in driving experiences between the two. IMHO the X6 is just an X5 with less cargo space and one less seat. Looks is subjective, but I've never been a fan of the X6's rear end (or front for that matter), and I can't imagine how you'd ever try to back that thing.

Isn't the X6 more expensive as well? Insurance is probably a nice bit pricier as well.

GL with your choice, the X5 is the more sensible option IMO.

If you're looking into used Deutsch SUVs, what about a GL550? Those things are hot looking, huge, and drive great. A used 08+ can probably be had for similar prices to the X6.

are you looking into new or used? Budget? If you are looking for something that is far from a slouch, try looking at the X5 M and X6 M models! I saw one for sale with about 3K miles for 70K, MSRP was 99K.

Style or Function? your choice...
They are almost identical...especially since the X5 now has the 35i and 50i engines.

I prefer the X6 because it has BMW's version of SH-AWD. It has torque vectoring AWD and the X5 doesn't.

I was looking to stay around 75k or a tad under but if I get either the x5 or x6 50i models with everything I want its like 79K, bmw's pricing on options sucks, and the X6M would be awesome but it prices out around 101K

They should like them if they have two of them lol.

Always thought the X6 was ugly and it doesn't look very useful. I'd take the X5.

Just curious. What made you come to an Acura forum to ask about a Bimmer? Not flaming, just asking.

The X5 and X6 are the same truck. The major differences are the roofline and the rear differential. The x5/6 with the new v8 is an animal. The differential in the x6 is cool, but unless your really pushing it, you're not going to really notice it.
You definitely feel like you are off the ground in the x6, but its not high up like a real truck.
If you get an X6, you need the back up camera. The rear visibility is terrible. The window looks big, but the total height of the window is practically nothing.

I used to own a TL up until a year ago, and would browse these forums just never bothered signing up until now...And I noticed Car Talk looked like a pretty good relatively unbiased place to ask this

Random question, does anyone else find BMW's packaging odd? I would love to get the cinnamon/orange-ish interior on the x5/x6 but then it rules out getting the active/ventilated seat package, I'm limited to only black or tan. Sucks.

got ya. Yes Azine is a haven for car enthusiasts of most types. BTW, to answer your question ask yourself this. If you get the X5 because it is more practical will you mentally kick yourself everytime you see an X6 drive pass?

Not odd at all. All car manufacturers play that game; Mercedes, Lexus, Infiniti... Acura is usually pretty straight forward. I think it has something to do with streamlining manufacturing as much as possible while still offering choices. Also, car manufacturers use this tactic to upsell you on features you may not need but have to get to get what you really want.

I'm finding myself leaning more towards the x5 right now, I don't think Id kick myself everytime I see an x6 because honestly you cant go wrong with either, the only issue I have had with driving the x5 and maybe I'm just crazy is that although it doesn't look as tall as some SUV's when you get in you actually sit pretty high up which I like but when I was driving the x5 through a parking garage it had me nervous each time I looked through the sunroof that I was about to hit a wall beam, again maybe I'm crazy lol!

Hi Andy. We were also looking at the 2011 BMW X5 and saw the 2011 BMW X6. No one in the family liked the X6's looks but I think its ONE HOT ride. Especially with the tuning options avaible for the X6's motor its very easy to make it up to par with the X6M.

If you want a family friendly SUV I would choose the X5. If you want to stand out more get the M package which makes it stand out and it looks HOT HOT.

Bimmerfest.com, Xoutpost.com good resources for more information regarding the X5/X6.

The X5 and X6 now use the exact same motor options. The only difference at this point is styling and the rear differential.

Maybe I'm asking an obvious question on an Acura board, but as a former TL owner, have you thought about an MDX/ZDX and save about $20K?

Of course looks are subjective, but if you find the X6 attractive, I'm assuming the ZDX ranks up there as well...

^^ If one finds the X6 attractive, then one will find the ZDX looking like the ugly mutated bad twin of the X6.

ZDX proportions are horrible.

I find both X6 and ZDX attractive and would suggest to go with the X6 if space and $$ if not a constraint. I do prefer the interior of the ZDX to that of the X6
