Is this a good buy 1997 Acura CL with 237k miles?
Ok guys I need your help. I'm thinking about buying a car for school. Well this guy is a mechanic and he's selling an Acura Cl with a replaced transmission with only 100k miles. The car need a paint job and a little work on the inside. I love the car and see potential in it. I mean its an ACURA! But i want something that will last a few years until I get enough money to buy something new. He's fixing the car and giving it a tune up he's been fixing it for about 2 weeks and said he won't sell me a bad car? So guys what do you think do u think its a good buy? should i buy it? what are some things i should know or questions i should ask him? thx God bless

Wait he's been fixing it for 2 weeks? Something serious must have happened. Just because it's an Acura doesn't mean it's invincible, shit breaks over time.
How much does he want for it?

Take it to an independent shop and have them look it over before you consider the purchase.

Definitely worth it to make sure everything is in good shape, they're great cars. Also pay close attention to the transmission as they do like to flake out, you may want to drain and refill the trans fluid and check for metal shavings while you have it there

There is a risk when buying a car from a mechanic, same as there is a risk when buying a car from a body guy. They could have done shotty work and covered it up well to make a profit. Definitely never rely on recommendations unless they come from someone who knows the mechanic personally.
Why bother saying the CL is ugly? OP isn't asking for advice on what car to buy, he's only asking if he should pass on this one or not. If he wanted an Integra or Civic, he'd be looking at one.

This.
Preferable someone you trust...
... we almost bought a 1st gen CL for our oldest son, but since he doesn't know a thing about cars, I didn't want to put him in a ride that would need and occ DIY fix or eventually another tranny (my biggest worry)...
... bought him a one owner, 93 accord with 130k on the clock that an old man had for about 2k ... he trashed it and ran it with no antifreeze...cracked the block... so I was screwed either way.
the OP, since he is actually asking some great questions is way ahead of our son in his situation! His outcome is guaranteed to come out better!

I don't think they're ugly at all, especially compared to a teg or civic, the lines on a cl are years ahead of any car out there, and they are a very attractive car, at least to me.

which means absolutely nothing.
And you believe him?
I agree with everyone else. Get the car checked out by your own or another mechanic.

Ah...the 1st gen CL. The car that brought me here.
And out of the all the cars I've owned...its the only one I do NOT miss in the least.

Is this an auto or manual? V6 or I4? A lot of people say the auto trans is crap, but my V6-auto is going strong . I especially like the power the 3.0 offers, considering my mom's Toyota has the numbest throttle pedal I've ever driven
