Giving up the M3 - what do I get now?
Boys -
First, let me say this to those who will say I'm giving up my balls.
I'm getting engaged to an unbelievably awesome woman who I want to provide the best possible life for. She has not asked me to do this, but I know she never agreed with the purchase of my car and was deeply saddened when I went against her advisement and purchased it anyway.
That said, it does not bother me the least bit that I've started to willingly look at my options on how I can maximize joint happiness. Amongst other non-monetary things in my life, I've decided to give up on frivolous spending - so I want to get rid of my M3.
So, I need your help on recommending what I should be looking for. I'm open to leasing or financing if the rates are low. I'm also looking for a car that will be usable under all weather conditions.
Thus far I've come up with the following in my head -
Mini Cooper S
Honda Accord V6 sedan
Infiniti G37x sedan
Nissan Maxima
Acura TL (as long as the transmissions don't still suck)
This decision will clearly make it acceptable for me to have a Porsche 911 by 40.
Your thoughts?

Well, the most "usable" under all weather conditions is probably the G37x. I'd personally get a Cooper S, but I'm just weird and love those cars. Realistically I think the G37x makes the most sense.

I'm just mulling this over in my head - I'm trying to convince myself this makes sense and the more I think about it, the more it does. Weird. I need a bigger place away from the city too.

Aw, sucks to see your M3 go. Did you even have time to have a taste of it say at a track after the break-in period? However I understand your logic and reason, personally out of your choices, I'd go ahead and get a G37xS.

Depends on what kind of car you are looking for and what you will be using it for, etc.
If you want something a little on the sporty side, I'd say definitely go for the Cooper. I think those cars are awesome. That was my first choice, but the one that my heart was set on that they had on the lot was just a little bit out of price range.
If you want more of a luxury ride and more room, G37x. They are very nice cars. The only reason I don't like them is cause everyone has a G. But regardless, they are good cars.
I like the new accords, but only the coupe, so if the sedan was you main option as far as that goes, I say :thumbsdow

How much money will you honestly be saving by doing this?
Is the M3 a big portion of your budget?
Just curious.

It's not about the money, it's about compromise. The cars I'm looking at are less then half the expense of my M. Plus factor in insurance and gas - figure I save $8,500 in the year? That's almost a trip to Tahiti.
Work wise, I'm driving a LOT more now as of a month ago. I was only driving 800 miles/mo., mostly on weekends, now I'm driving 2,500 miles+/mo.

Engaged means she can pay for half of the expenses now. Keep the M3.
You will get bored with most of those cars. Get another E46 M3 or a 330i ZHP with snow tires and you good to go!

now i gotta join the band wagon (again) and buy something else?
Dude, you are going to lose a lot of money on this deal. I mean...a lot!
As far as driving all winter....i just drove home in 4 inches of snow. That is not a good reason.
I understand this desire to be "responsible" . Making a decision like this is financially bad. It may make you feel more responsible because you are sacraficing you car. But....
Just want you to think about things.

at everyone trading in cars after less than six months, and at your need to repetitively convince us that this change has nothing to do with your fiancee.
If you truly think it makes financial sense to get rid of the car and move into something with a lesser value right now, why not consider something 1 -3 years old and REALLY make your dollar stretch....let someone else pay the depreciation.

First generation MCS ftw! They run about 23-25K for a fully equipped 06 JCW.
It's next on my list, just waiting for the right one... I don't want one with a sunroof, it's crazy how many people opted for that huge sunroof.
My next comparable option would be a new GTI, those things are growing on me...

How you gonna offset the 15k hit when you sell the M3? Did you have a big downpayment or just going to roll the negative it into another car.
If rolling it into another then only way to really save is to buy a super cheap car. Used Mazda3s are nice.

How big a portion? Prob #4. Housing is 1st, I like taking 4 to 5 nice vacations a year, I like buying nice things for myself, car is next.

Damn Yup... Not only does your woman have you bent over, but you're gonna really take it in the ass when you have to get rid of the car.
Oh and I vote for a 328i.

ah... remember... my M3 was already preowned at 4,200 miles so someone else ATE the depreciation the first time around. Should have mentioned that little tid bit.

The trade most dealers have offered me are still in line with what I've paid, so that's a non-issue.
Again, I should have prefaced my original post with that.
Yes... it would have been VERY dumb to dump a NEW car only 6 months out, but this is not the case.

Now that I think about it, I'd like to change my vote to a CPO 335i sedan. Chip it afterwards.

Have you considered maybe a Subaru Legacy GT Spec B? Very nice around the price range of the others (brand new) and comes with a shit load of options like AWD, heated seats, heated wipers, Navi, yada yada yada. Best of all if you get to join the cool Suabru Community, lol.
