Gear Update: Tanner Faust as Host

The Truth About Cars is saying that rally racer, drifter, and stunt driver Tanner Faust will be one of the hosts of the American Top Gear. If you were like me and had never heard of him before, watch this video of him hosting a show on SPEED.
<object id="vvq4801bb9b25281" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/ErNQHsVZrBM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="355" width="425">

They also are reporting that Dan Neil will no longer be involved with the American Top Gear.
But the big news here is that NBC execs pulled L.A. Times auto writer Dan Neil from the U.S. show after a viewing his audition tape — despite a signed contract with the Pulitzer prize-winning critic. Neil says he’s “very disappointed” with the network’s decision, but understands their motivation. “They couldn’t handle my heat,” he joked. “Seriously. It’s probably because I’m not very good on TV.”
In addition, the article addresses some of the concerns we’ve been having about advertisers.
Neil also reveals that NBC and the BBC are aware that aping the original Top Gear’s no-holds-barred reviewing style could piss off the media company’s automotive advertisers — and devised a solution. “They’re writing around the problem, by not doing car reviews unless they really love the car.”
I seriously hope that’s a joke because making fun of cars is one of the things that makes Top Gear great. Then again, we have to face the reality that the whole reason NBC exists is due to advertisers, so they aren’t exactly going to want to piss them off. So, I guess not reviewing the crap cars is better than no show at all.

Eh. I've actually changed channels away from that show when it was actually on TV.

tanner is an exceptional driver and car-lover, but his commentary is sub-par

I called it in the last Top Gear thread!

I knew NBC would cave in to advertisers.

This is and I, for one, will not be watching the American Top Gear. Booooooo!

NBC FTMFL!

It needs to go on PBS.

Here is a quote by Dan Neil, who is currently out of the cast for American Top Gear, on the reviews....

Neil also reveals that NBC and the BBC are aware that aping the original Top Gear’s no-holds-barred reviewing style could piss off the media company’s automotive advertisers — and devised a solution. “They’re writing around the problem, by not doing car reviews unless they really love the car.”

Part of what makes top gear so good is the comments about how bad the cars are. Oh well, figured it would be bastardized by American networks."

So I guess that's going to leave out a lot of American made cars...

I've seen some show that Tanner Faust hosted, and he's fine as one.

I have no idea what Dan Neil looks like or how good/bad he is on TV but I think his writing style would definitely translate to a Top Gear show.

+1 I actually was suprised he could "hold his own" as a host. But the problem is that the bar is set WAY to high when we compare it to the UK version. Any host is setup for fail.

It will be the same as it is with British vs. American car mags, or the Japanese vs. American Iron Chef.

The overseas products rules, and the watered down US version will

Here's Dan Neil hosting a video review of the Smart Fortwo. I think he would've had a fighting chance.
