They are claiming on the new ford commercials that their quality is the same as toyota. WTF????
now maybe the toyotas that are made in the us and not japan may be true. But that is a big statement to make when it isn't completely true

Yeah, I heard that too on the latest Ford commercial. I basically . I mean, Ford's quality has probably come up a little, and I know Toyota's has gone down some, but IMO Ford made a pretty bold statement that isn't true. Toyota's quality is still very good.

Ford touting quality equal to that of Toyota and Honda
Posted Apr 7th 2008 5:57PM by Jeremy Korzeniewski
Filed under: Car Buying, Marketing/Advertising, Ford
The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan-based RDA Group has found that Ford is on par with top-level stalwarts Toyota and Honda when it comes to vehicle quality. Ford managed 1,284 "things-gone-wrong" (TGW) per 1,000 vehicles during the first three months of ownership this year, statistically matching the two top Japanese brands, which are tied at 1,250 TGW. Though it certianly won't be the last word in the ongoing debate as to who makes the best cars, it is at least a good sign for Ford. Perhaps what's most impressive is that 36 of 40 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo and Mazda nameplates improved this year versus 2007. Ford's performance in this study marks an eight-percent improvement over the previous year, at which time they were tied with Toyota, but trailing industry-leader Honda. While Ford is glad to see quality improving, every automaker would surely like to sit alone at the top of the quality rankings, and Ford is no different.
Ford builds some pretty good vehicles these days, but faces a large perceived quality gap, as only 41-percent of consumers consider Ford vehicles according to their own internal data. For that reason, expect Ford to tout these new quality findings as part of their Drive One campaign.

I know none of us WANT to believe it...but I dont think a lot of the newer Fords have been having many issues.
Mustangs are rated pretty reliable.
The Edge.
Their Trucks as always
Fusion.
Maybe its just me, but I dont hear a lot of stories of Fords breaking down left and right.
Build quality might still be subpar in some cases...but I dont think reliability has been a huge issue of late

more power to ford. the more domestic brands that up their quality only creates more competition in the market, and then every one has to be on top of their game which leads to better vehicles and a bigger variety to choose from. i see it as a good thing...

The RDA study was looking at the 3-month quality- sort of like JD Power's initial quality survey.
Right now, nothing is settled for the long term, particularly since all (Ford, Honda/Acura and Toyota) have had recalls recently or pending. The 1-year and 3-year quality surveys should be more telling.

It's great to see that a US car company is building better quality vehicles. Now they need to build something that I would want to buy.

That was uncalled for...

I just test drove a 09 Camry SE V6 today, and the assembly quality (right term?) has definitely improved over the 07 models. While the material is still the same (and just as lousy), the car I drove today had tighter fitting panels and fewer interior gaps than my friend's 07.

But I believe, imo, that GM has that end covered. I have really been liking almost all of their new vehicles across the brands.

I do like GM taking some of the good Opel models and just doing minor alterations on them to make them American friendly. Those vehicles are solid. The Solistice/Sky roadster is a good start (the Sky is much nicer looking), and the "First Ever" (what a lame advert) G8 seems like it will be a good car.
But Ford really has bland vehicles. The Fusion was just ripped by Car and Driver in an 8 way comparison test. The Mustang would be better if they didn't have so many V6 models in car rental lots / chicks driveways.
But my point, which I still believe, is the Big 3 don't have anything I want, or must have, and there is a difference. There are some vehicles I like, but some vehicles just make the flagpole go up......Like an Audi A5. That makes the blood travel south.....

Tundra is made in San Antonio, TX and Tacoma is made in Torrance, CA...
Toyota can't keep up with demand, so they have admitted themselves that they have quality issues:

Kind of hard to say that Toyota quality hasn't gone down, when even Toyota themselves say that quality HAS gone down

When your cars suck and you're on the bottom of the quality pole...there's nowhere to go but up. Any movement upwards would be an improvement for ford

i did have an 87 escort gt. It really wasnt bad until 100-120k then all kinds of shit was breaking. It seems that when you hit a certain mileage in a ford, it gives you problems

I would hope US automakers are taking their threat of extinction seriously by building better quality products. Unfortunately better quality does not equal people really wanting to buy one...they just don't seem to have either the desire or ability to make cars that appeal to people with a real sense of style, quality, and performance.

Acura/Hondas have been made in Union/Logan/Shelby county Ohio since 1980s. I got an 94 Accord which Engine was built in Anna(Line 1) and body was built in Marysville it has 320,000 miles on it. no transmission work, no motor work, just timing belt, water pump, tires, and basic oil changes, stuff like that.
I can show you quality audits (my dad works for Honda) where American Honda competes with Japan Honda

And I'm calling bullshit on posting audits...just like the pics of the goldwing, any related to fire fighting, your tractors, or anything else you brought to the forum from your wonderful little retarded fantasy land.

Accord been built in the US for years, going to toyota Camry which is a legend in quality built in Kentucky, Nissan Altima and Maxima built in the states, Toyota Tundra and Tacoma all built in the states. Mercedes R class in Alabama, BMW X5 and Z4 built in SC, why are you guys so anti-american.yes i think it's partially pride who puts it together. but the reason big 3 sucks on quality is cause they put cheap shit in the parts. they'll save a quarter here and a dollar here. because to pay Union labor the 30+ an hour to work at GM,Ford or Dodge. Honda starts at 20 an hour. so instead of that extra 10 an hour pocketing it companies like Honda,Toyota, and Nissan puts it back into their car with heavier duty parts. bottom line.

Oh yes...its much cheaper and more profitable to build here en mass then to solely build overseas and pay high tariffs, taxes, shipping, port costs to get ALL the vehicles.

A lot of Toyotas are built in America and have been for a while now.... including Corollas and Toyota trucks. I live probably 45 mins away from the NUMMI Toyota plant in Fremont
And I have to agree with mongo on one point, assuming that union worker wage claim is accurate. Not that its that much cheaper or expensive, but if only the unions could go fuck off, Ford would start saving a lot more money, and MAYBE start putting in some quality stuff in their cars.
Gone are the days when all GMs have trim pieces that you can easy pull off with what seems like just the palm of your hand. Still doesn't bother me, but I notice. Makes it easier for me to install stuff in the dash anyway
I'll agree that Toyota's quality has gone down though, at least reliability wise. The Tundra had more recalls than most manufacturers issue for an entire brand in a year. Still, I wouldn't buy any current Toyota or Lexus, no matter how nice the interior is, how reliable it is, how cheap it is, or how "quality" it is.
