Final Decision: Trading 04 TL for an S2000

looks like im going to get a used S2000. had my 04 TL for about a year and a half. put over $3000 into it and many hours of work.

i was very suprised that my dad was actually going to get an S2000. (im only 18, and im very lucky to have a family that doesnt make me pay for my car)i talked to him a couple months ago and he was more towards the "no" side, kinda because he never saw the way i drive and he never saw me drive a manual before...(TL is auto) i bought a 96 civic to learn stick on and as a beater car.

im in hong kong right now and thats where my parents live. so this year i got my international license and started driving around hk with my dad. he took home a 360 spider(his company car) https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...1&page=1&pp=25
and let me drive it for a weekend with him in the car. and he gained a lot of trust in me. he said if i can handle this car, i can most likely handle other cars.

after that weekend, i took out his car by myself (an S-class, not the 360) and he didnt worry at all. so couple nights ago i talked to him again about it and he said yes. i was really happy, i told him that i can get the car ive always wanted and he can save a little on car payments.

we bought the TL in the first place was because he didnt allow me to get a stick, so we went with the auto TL

so once i get back to US i gotta sell the car quick or trade it in.

i have 2 options that i want your opinions in:

1. lease an 2005 S2000, there is a amazing lease deal right now for it. (3300 down and 300 a month)but the only thing is that i cant mod it.

2. buy a used one, 02-03 are pretty cheap on the market now. butim afraid theyre gunna have their shares of problems because most of the S2000s out there have been abused to hell. and i will mod it as time passes

which one should i go with?

get a used one off a private sale. You'll end up saving more.
And since you want to mod it anyways..buy used and use the extra $$$$ to mod that thing.

Try to find one with lower milege so that there is less of a chance of abuse.

No offense, but don't even waste your time if you are only going to offer them 19-they will laugh in your face.

because i will either be leasing an 05 or buying a used one..

i have no plans on buying a new one because it depreciates too much, so leasing an 05 is the way to go, and i have no plans of buy-back if i lease

so theres no point in dumping money into it

I got a decent deal on mine from Carmax. Better prices than I found anywhere privately. Got an 02 with only 20,000 miles on it.

They aren't necessarily all beat on. The majority of s2k drivers are older, and most have it as a weekend car. Find one with low miles and no mods and chances are it was babied.

because 2.0 has 9k rev limit

this is from my own judgement, since theyre all making parts for the new 2.2, the 2.0 parts price will drop a bit.

the 2.2s all have clutch delay, which smoothes out shift and wont let you shift hard. they do have a mod for it tho

2.2 > 9k rpm

It gets really old having zero torque. I know the 2.2 isn't drastically different, but every little bit helps.

seriously go with the 04, do not get caught up with the 9k rev limit, it sucks compared to the 2.2

i have owned both and regret every minute of getting rid of the 04 for an 03

clutch delay????

my 04 was faster in any gear than all of the modded 03's (non-blown) i used to hook up with through s2ki.com

just plain faster to start, and having inch wider rims all the way around made it handle way better imo also...

yea...clutch delay, a slave cylinder smooths out the shift so u can chirp tires, it compensates for drivetrain shock. i test drove one and theres no way you can spin tires while shifting gears

Honestly this is rediculous, if I had a 04 TL I would not be lusting after an s2000, what the hell is the point?

if your dad has all those fancy cars, you should ask him to get you the Lotus Elise.

to tell u the truth, he honestly hates the way any sports car rides...he bought it because his partner paid half and that was when he made some money off a project.

so no elise for him, it would be nice if there was an elise for me, but id prob take s2k because parts are prob really high for that little machine

since when was spinning tires considered rice? i guess everyone has interpretation of rice differently in mind. i guess a lot of ppl over s2ki with 04-05 s2000s are rice...

my vocab of rice is overly rediculous body kits and lights....and people who have those kits and have no power to back it up.

last time i checked out some s2000, it doesnt have ugly body kit and its got power to back it up...

so whats ur point???

i see that you have a 03 s2000, meaning you dont have an idea of what im talking about unless u test drove an 04-05, the shifts are off by far, i like to feel the power when i shift...not some slave cylinder smoothing it out. (even though the power is still there, you dont feel it as much)

my point is that if you seriously want to spin tires, and that for some random reason is important to you

you will be sorely disappointed with the s2000

i actually kinda am disappointed at the ap2s, unless it gets that mod

the ap1 is perfect the way it shifts

anyways u can borrow me some exotic cars when i am back to HK, i live in central, very close to Lan Kwai Fong, plus I know Nicolas Tse's sister (Tse Ting Ting) in person, so we can all hang out and party together~

my parents now driving a Lexus IS200 in HK, it's slow, it's highly moddable but i cannot mod it coz my dad needs to drive his clients around....need sth more powerful and sexier

or maybe i get myself a Honda Jazz when i go back and put some Mugen body kit

I did not know you could chirp gears in the S2k.

I have a 2005 and am still in the break-in period (384 miles) and was not able to chirp 2nd during the test drive of one I did not buy.

Interesting. BTW, IMO, chirping a gear is not rice. My 96 Maxima SE 5mt would ocassionally chirp 3rd and I would be in my glory.

Chirping gears > Burn-outs

my dads in the entertainment business...he does stage, sound, and lighting for concerts. i know andy lau and a lot of people personally. but they prob dont rememebr me cuz i barely see them.

honda jazz is prob the hottest thing to mod in hk right now, all the mags have parts for them, cant find any jdm s2k parts though lol...there seems to be more minivan parts than the s2k

they gave me shit for buying my 96 civic beater...but since they bought me the TL when it was new and stuff, the payments are rediculous. so i offered to lower his payment by buying a used s2k

Chirping gears > Burn-outs
sorry about the multiple posts, i have no idea how to do all the quotes in one post.

you cant spin tires in the 04-05, unless you lose traction in a turn or something.
the slave cylinder smoothes the shifting out. so when you do a clutch drop, instead of all the drivetrain shock going to the tranny and the diff, the clutch takes care of it.

people over at s2ki have figured out a way to change that, they either replaced the slave cylinder with an 03, or take something out of the 04's cylinder

this makes the clutch wear out a lot more, but its a lot cheaper over tranny and diff, mainly diff

i agree with chirping isnt rice, im in my glory too when i chirp 2nd in my 96 civic (106hp)

I chirp second very hard at least once a day. The car is no mustang, you aren't going to break em loose, but its still a good feeling.
