Question Federal Auto Auctions

What are your views/opinions on auto auctions that are open to the public? Does anyone recommend buying a car from one? Should a mechanic be present? I am in the market for a second car, $6500 is my budget. I was thinking of going, but have heard alot of people say to bring a mechanic along.

Anyone ever buy a car from an auction?

i have been to a few local public auctions. they were full of crap that dealerships couldn't even sell at the private auctions. although dealer only auctions around here are pathtic as well.

A auction company here lets you start up the car and listen to the engine, but not drive it. I wouldnt buy anything from an auto auction if I couldnt atleast start the car (this is going for the federal auctions, obviously not the ones with valuable cars)
