E46 M3 or Evo X.

My friend can get either as his first car, don't ask. I'm in shock too. Now which one would you pick and why? If he gets the E46, he'll be getting slightly modded and used from someone who is pretty much like his older brother.

E46: 2005-2006 I think
- CSL trunk
- K&N intake
- Other visual/cosmetic mods
- LOOKS HOT

Evo X: Used
- Stock, I assume.

M3, I say that b/c my friend has a red one and its HAWT!
Although maintanence will be much more, especially since its used.
Think about the special Castrol TWS 10-60 oil changes
replacement of VANOS intake cam sprocket bolt

Depends on how well taken care of the car was/is and how mechanically inclined/financially endowed your friend is.

Evo X easier to deal with, maintenance wise, driving, way more torque then the high strung 3.2 S54 motor, although its not horrible. The M gets more respect most places you go.

Either way get the cars checked out.
Used high reving NA motor vs used turbo motor =/

Post this same thread in the Evo and M3 boards.

Well the owner of the M3 pretty much lives with my friend, so he'll still be around to look after it and help if/when needed.

And start a war on other Boards?! hahaha NOT.

**EDIT: the owner of the M3 also wasn't really into driving it hard. More into making it look great.

They are both mine cars, but I my self would take the EVO 10. You can't go wrong with close to 300 HP plus AWD is nice.

I'd pick the M3 only if he has the available funds to maintain it. All the little up keeps add up really fast.

The E46 M3 is an amazing car with stunning good looks. I would choose one over any Evo any day (provided it was CPO or had some kind of warranty)....

has the M3 had a valve adjustment recently (Inspection II)? If not, expect to shell out $1000+ for that. And yes it is needed.

I'm just going out on a limb and saying the Inspection II for the M3 wouldn't be a big deal compared to the insurance cost of covering either of these cars with a 16 year old driver. That said, the M3 has been called one of the best handling cars of our time, and you can't go wrong with that.

Young and dumb will make either car a terrible choice.

I would get the Evo X because the steering response and acceleration is better. It's also cheaper to maintain. you can easily tweak the turbo to output more power while keeping the stock look. finally, it has 3 LSDs, which apparently works really well together.

I would tell my friend to get other cars that are like under $25,000 as a first car. There are so many great cars in that segment that it would be wrong to skip couple of those cars.

But, to answer your OP question, I would tell your friend to get Evo X just because it's newer car.

He better hope it had at least 1 of the inspections done.
Valve adjustment by itself is $400.

if you know how the M3 was taken care of/driven, id take that. i think it would be hard to find an EVO that hasnt been launched/redlined to hell

I think that's giving a 16 year old with a 300+hp car too much credit. My guess is 6 weeks.

where does it say the kid is 16? he's probably 18 like this guy..

I would have said the Evo if it was SST and the M3 was stock. But this M3 sounds real nice. Show some pics

I don't think his age is the issue. It's the fact that it's his first car & he more than likely won't be used to anything like a M3 or Evo X.

he may still have some experience. I drove my parents cars around for 2 years before I had my own.

I think it depends more on the personality..is he a show-off..responsible..etc

Possible deal here.

That's why I recommended the Evo though, b/c I just don't see an 18 year old being able to run & maintain a M3 as his first car, unless his folks are helping him.

I can agree to that.

As a first car, those are cars I would not recommend to anyone.

So being a bit sporty, and look good are what the driver wants, then I would say a Mazdaspeed3 or Subaru Imprezza WRX (non-STI). He'll save some money, have a quick car, and not get raped badly on insurance.

A VW Golf GTI is also not a bad choice.

Neither, tell him to get a civic and learn how to drive responsibly first. Then go for the Evo X.

Right, because if you were 16 and had a choice of these two cars then you too would pick a civic.

100% agree. Evo will never ever be on my possible list of cars to purchase. Why? Just look who makes it.

Putting considerations like inexperience or recklessness aside, I'd pick the M3. I like the Evo as well, but (I imagine) the M3 is a purer driving experience, due to the Evo's electronic aids and AWD.

However, as others have said, your friend should get the M3 checked out, because maintenance costs will certainly be higher.

M3 vs an Evo....is it even a question? if he was considering an M3 to begin with then he already has $$$ to shell out for maintenance or repairs! I just hope I dont see this idiot driving around thinking he's the man since he has an m3 as his first car. But then again whats the difference between a porcupine and a bmw driver ???

This. Make sure he has a PPI done on the car. Absolute must with an E46 M3.
