Drove an 2005 E55

GOOD GOD....

My oldest cousin owns one and today without his knowledge my other cousin and i took it around for a little bit. =)

I have never EVER felt anything like that before in my life. We took turns driving it, and with a little gas, it put our car to shame.
But the most amazing thing about this car was that even at 100, it was still pulling... and pulling pretty hard. I couldnt believe it, half the time we had to keep an eye on each other because we wouldnt know how fast we were going. i thought it was funny that after our drive the trip computer said that we averaged 13 mpg. =)

now my other cousin has an ams stage 3 evo, and that thing can keep up with the sl55's but even he admitted, that this car had him beat.

low end might not be as fast, but at the top, this thing keeps on going, and going and going.

is it worth 100K (with all the options and tax) ?? absolutely NOT.

fellas seriously, after i drove this car, it made me appreciate out TSX even more. sure its not as fast or as nice interior wise as an e55, but even towards the end of my drive i realized that this is a car, and eventually it will become just another car to my cousin and whoever else that owns one. unless you get the same feeling driving that car as i did today, with the thumping heart, and sweaty palms, everytime you drive this thing, its gonna get old, and i would much rather get sick of a 27K car than a 100K car. besides, to the untrained eye it still looks like a normal e class sedan.

for the money our tsx comes incredibly equipped and has enough power to get around. yea it has all of us wanting more power, more features, but i still think that its a great buy, and it gets the job done well.

so guys, just know that whatever you drive, youre gonna want more, and more, so wouldnt you much rather get sick of a 27K car than a 100K car? i know i would.

If I did something so stupid I certainly wouldn’t post about it and expect congratulations from anyone here.
Pretty dumb thing to do. Better put your flameproof underwear on.

Unless your cousins E55 is modded, it won't beat an SL55. So I don't know how an EVO can beat an SL55 when it is faster than the E55?

Looks like you had fun...Its a great ride and Im sure you were safe ...I hate when people judge prior to knowing all the facts - Id flame you if you were reckless, but your innocent until proven guilty in my book A couple lively sprints on a deserted back road, I have no prob with...

EDIT - And if I was your cousin, Id kill you (I missed that part at first)

and fwiw, your reasoning about getting sick of a 100k car is too...

ps. the E55 is a bit faster than the SL55... same engine, E55 = 4087 lbs, SL55 = 4235 lbs. The E55 is the fastest 55 series AMG.

just because I know this guy doesn't mean I would just take one of his cars out for a spin without asking

ps. the silver car in foreground is a 1200hp TT Viper SRT-10 and that's a 360CS

E55 is 469hp and the SL55 is 493hp. Same engine, just differently tuned. I've driven the E55 around 20 times and the SL55 around 50 times and the SL just feels faster to me. In normal driving, the E55 feels a little quicker. But at WOT, the SL has a completely different feeling than the E. The E doesn't throw you back in the seat like the SL does.

That said, .1 of a difference in 0-60 is kinda hard to tell when you're in something that fast, so who knows?

good call about the hp difference - that is true. However the E55 is still faster. I am going by 1/4 mile times and trap speeds from various sources... of course we are talking about a couple of tenths and a couple of mph in the 1/4 - which is negligible... but still...

I looked those up too and they were both 12.5 for the 1/4 (Motor Trend/Car and Driver). Basically I am just wondering how an EVO can beat an SL55 and lose to an E55 if they are basically the same.

You guys should have gotten permission. Imagine had you gotten pulled over by a cop that was having a bad day.

Besides, you have to come pick up a proper driver (like me) to take with you to demonstrate its true visceral limits.

Here's why (with my certificates listed):

Bondurant School of High Performance Driving : High Performance Driving, Intro to Road Racing, Advanced Road Racing

Porsche Driving Experience : High Performace Driving (2 Day), Masters Course

Yes, I can probably outdrive anyone on the board, but I also help make people better drivers. I've been a private driving instructor for over 3 years.

SL65 is nuts

I heard one in Atlanta and it sounded soooooo good pulling away. The problem I have with the SL65 is that for $60,000 more than a SL55, I could have Renntech mod the SL55 for $16,000 and have 615hp for $40,000 less than a SL65. Unless you want the name, it doesn't make any sense to buy the SL65.

Sweet car regardless, just a lot of money for the performance upgrades.

Its a car in our shop. We have Mercedes (Everything they make) and Maybach's. So we have access to any car.

The power is great. So if you floor the gas from a stop, the car begins to fly but the ESP kicks in for a sec through 1st gear, then 2nd gear hits and you are pushed back in the seat. Whats great is that you can chirp the tires going 80MPH just by flooring the gas again. I LOVE this car.

the fastest 4 door in the world...my boss has one but i am not thrilled either

we had the S-class b4 which is way better than a E in terms of ride and interior

even my boss admires my TL with exceptional build quality and the engine is quiet and smooth with no vibration

This was Mercedes testing from one of their magazines. Seems like a drivers race to me. If one person gets the good jump, then they win, if not, then the other does.

Regardless, I still want to know how an EVO can beat an SL55 and lose to an E55.

he's a pretty gd driver (an ex mech at Aston Martin in UK) but still cannot to handle all the power on the E55, those stock tires sucks

he put a penny on my engine and it doesn't drop, so he knows our engine is good, which is why he bought the new Odessey as delivery van

forgive me if i sounded a bit reckless with my "test drive" but im a grown man, I think i deserve a little more credit than being tossed into the wolves as some 17 yr old ricer who dosent know right from left.

and i didnt steal it jeez... it wouldnt of had mattered if i asked or didnt ask, since were all family its all good.

if it wasnt possible to get sick of a 100K car there would be no need to have a 200K car or a 400K car now would there? all I was trying to say is that a car is a car is a car. Yea it will give you thrills and the aficionados will love it to death, but to a normal joe out there, 100K for a car is a bit excessive dont you think?

that said, look at the 27-40K Acuras and whatnot we drive, id say pretty good value and good job in buying one of the best buys in regards to cars out there.

its an AMS stage 3 Evo (whatever that means).... he said he raced the sl55 out on the highway, and said he was pulling on him... i dunno take that with a grain of salt if you will. I guess pulling = beating

he raced the e55 when it was first bought, and said that he could keep up in the beginning and maybe even get ahead, but on top this thing just pulls and pulls so he figured that his evo wouldnt be able to keep up. again take it with a grain of salt, everyone has their racing stories and we all know how those go.

again i didnt at all mean to come off the way i apparently did to most of you guys, it was my intention to reaffirm what great cars we all drive, and maybe even bring us all down to the reality that even the most exotic of toys can indeed get old.

.... but its still fast as hell

a stage 3 EVO can pull away from the 55s for sure

it pumps out more than 500hp with such setup

man you must be a lot closer to your family than me. I would have locked my wife in the cellar if she took my 100k car without asking let alone a cousin

So did you tell him you took it out? What was his response?

Damn I had no idea they pumped out that much hp with a stage 3.

It's a shame Mitsubishi makes it or I would be interested in one.

I've done pretty much the same thing with an 04 E55, my friends dad owns it and he went out of town and we took it out, my friend let me drive it, holy shit! iv'e never driven a car that fast. just being able to roll at about 25mph and floor it and the tires will still squeal was awesome to me.

well, same to the STi, they both can do 500hp with stage 3

but of coz it's $$$, the cost to mod almost double the price of the Evo or STi
