this is why you remove the mods before you take the car to the dealer!!!

I'd also much rather mod a leased car then one I own

That would suck, I'm guessing that 50k mile/4 year warranty doesn't cover any of that? Ouch.

What does him leasing have to do with anything.

Either way, sucks to be him. These intakes on the 335i seem to cause more harm than good. They dont even increase power, just gives it more sound to the spooling.

An adjustable blow off valve can smash up light duty turbochargers like that if it's adjusted wrong or "set too hard". The whole idea behind aftermarket BOV's is that they can usually hold higher boost levels without leaking, but with those small ass Mitsubishi turbos he might have been okay if he'd left the stock one in there.

Oh, and the fact that the car was leased didn't help either. Although it's not like BMW would have helped him out if he'd have financed it...they would have denied him warranty coverage just the same because of modifications. But the fact that it was leased left him no choice but to fix it or face a lawsuit...not his car after all.

They'd probably deny the claim, it's kind of like stacking your car up at open track day...you're on your own if something goes cow in most cases.

I don't think the guy's a douche. He totally manned up. He admitted that he shouldn't have modded a leased car and paid up for his mistake.

Lost his savings, took out a bank loan to do it....will cost him for years, though.

I've seen waaaay too many people on this board who's first inclination is to hide the facts and try to blame the manufacturer or the dealer. Way to man up dude.

If the car were a purchase would the repair have cost less?

Leased or Purchased a $26k failure is still an EXTRA $26k on the cost of ownership.

My car's a lease and I don't feel like an idiot modding it. I'll just take out the mods and sell them when I'm done.

modded my 99 Accord and 02 Maxima while under lease. Caveat: I did wind up selling both to inlaws as lease buyouts in the end but, it was not a consideration when I started modding.

Why would anybody heavily mod a leased car?

why not? I wouldn't hesitate in modding a leased car, and most likely would go further then I would on a car I owned. You don't have to worry about the car lasting 200K miles when it's a lease. And all you have to do is remove the mods when you return it (same thing you'd most likely want to do if you were selling a car you owned)

And I wouldn't call this guys bmw "heavily" modded...he simply had bolt ons.

In fact, I traded in my last lease early and they took the car with basic bolt-ons without a penalty in the cost. Just because it's a lease doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't mod it.

I don't have probs with bolt ons that can be easily removed, but this guy was using a Juicebox, who know what type of internal damage that caused.

That's why I don't buy used cars, you don't know what the previous owner did to it.

Juicebox is a bolton IMO. And as mentioned, i'd rather "harm" a leased motor then one I own

more than likely something went into those turbos and they tried to eat up a rock or piece of his intake.

still, modding a leased car not always the best idea.

He should've gotten the Dinan chip. Any damage would've been covered under warranty.

I guess the 335 isnt the "next supra" like some were saying, especially with bolt-ons killing this thing.
