Dont Fill Car with motor running

hey guys...i just thought i should let everyone know not to run their engines while pumping gas, not just for saftey reasons, but it's been "proven" that when pumping gas (especially when empty) u can kick the dirt up that is sitting on the bottom of the tank n very easily get sucked into your fuel lines n clog up your filters, possibly couse damage to ur motor......hope this help, it's the holiday season n i figured this would be a great tip for our fellow TL'ers........MERRY X-MAS

Huh? The dirty that sits in the bottom of your tank? Where do you think the fuel exits the gas tank? That's right, at the bottom. So why would it matter? Also, you don't think driving around displaces the dirt? I think you've had one too many spiked egg nogs.

take it as if ur filling n empty bucket...if theres a bit of dirt stuck to the bottom, when hit it with the hose the dirt tends to break away...but when the fluid is already in there n fuel moves around due to driving...dirt still sits in the bottom of the tank :oD

I agree that the car should be off when filling your tank. I've read a few articles that back up the cliam. Merry X-Mas!

I only get gas where I can pay at the pump. An attendant would have to actually come outside to make me turn off the engine.

I agree that you should shut off your car when filling up but not because of dirt in the tank.

You should shut off the engine as a common courtesy to others if anything.

Doesn't get too bad -- it only takes two mins at most if your tank is empty....your car's not going to go from 'nice and toasty' to 'absolutely freezing' in that amount of time. Anyway, engine should be shut off to help prevent sparks, static, or electricity when you have gasoline fumes spewing from the hose. *KABOOM*

just because you've been doing it for some odd years, doesn't make it the right thing to do. I would think that its pretty freakin obvious that u shoudl turn off the car. Like someone else said, it only takes a coupla minutes to fill the tank.

I've always heard your supposed to turn off your car as well. It has to do with safety precautions, as someone previously stated. I agree that it's foolish to believe that since something hasn't happenened, it won't.

The fuel pumps from the bottom of the tank. If it pumped from anywhere else you would always have some fuel left. So nothing really "settles." Also, as someone else mentioned, there are fuel filters for a reason.
