Even in my manual cars.... and I always shift into gear first, then let go of the parking brake. Automatic or stick, the lever gets out of gear without much effort.

Always...i just hate the feeling of letting go of the brake and having all the weight jolt forward *shivers*

I always use the parking brake. What i do is stop while in drive, engage the parking brake, slip the tranny into neutral, let go of the regular brakes, the car will sit on the parking brake, i then slip the car into park. By doing that, the car never sits on the tranny. even sometimes when a parking brake is fully engaged, it will sit on the tranny especially for those with loose parking brakes.

Ex-girlfriend had a Ford Escape... her drive way was a good 30* angle up (no joke) when she'd shift out of Park the tranny wouldn't budge... Once it did come out it would bang out of gear... the most horrid sound you can hear from a tranny...

It wasn't the cars fault, only the operators...I tried telling her to use it but nothing sank into her head, hence she is now the ex-girlfriend

Two reasons:

1. Jacking the car up.
2. Burnouts.

That being said, my mom does it all the time.

I do it all the time, its the way I was taught. My wife doesn't, and it drives me nuts. I just cringe when she puts it in P then lets of the foot brake before engaging e-brake. No matter how many times I tell her, she forgets.

if i'm on a hill I put the car in Neutral, hit the e-break, put it in park. take all the strain off the trans.

now i do use the e-brake to practice at a clear snowy mall parking lot for winter driving

I never shift into or out of Park unless the hand brake is applied, and only shift to Park from Neutral. Never directly from a drive gear. I'll come to a stop, shift to N, set the hand brake, release foot brake. When the car settles I shift to Park. You don't need to have your foot on the brake to do this.
I do the same even if I'm backing into a space, shift to N from Reverse then the same procedure as above.
When leaving - Start car, step on brake, shift into drive gear (D or R), release hand brake, release foot brake.

Someone told me MB or Bmw locks up all four brakes when you go in to park

And i always use the "parking brake" started out on a manual its programed habit for me.

drive a manual and use the handbrake always. if in auto, use the handbrake if it is by the shifter. seems to slip my mind when it by the brake pedal

My dad's bmw jerks a bit when he puts it in park, so I'm guessing they don't have that, and his car is an '08

Here's a spin...Does it matter how hard you hold the brake pedal down? Or as long as it's pushed? I mean I use to push it all the way down to the floor, but I think it may be the same as just tapping it...

And when you put it into Park...Do you go fast? Or do you slowly go through the gears?

It depends on whether the brake is mechanical or electronic. I push down on the parking brake pedal, or pull up the brake lever, until there is lots of resistance. I think Hondas and Acuras only come with mechanical parking brakes.

Mechanical systems also need to be adjusted-- otherwise, the parking brake won't work and the handbrake lever/pedal will feel loose. If the parking brake pedal goes all the way to the floor, or the lever goes all the way up, the parking brake and/or cable needs adjustment.

I shift quickly into Park after putting on the parking brakes.

I think maybe 1 out of 10 friends with automatics, uses it...And the only reason he does is because out of habit from his manual...

Do you guys do this, even at short stops? (Ex: Gas station, waiting for someone, etc)

Hills are the only reasons for parking brakes in AT vehicles. Otherwise, they're not used...

BMWs don't lock the regular brakes but use an electic motor to operate an otherwise standard parking brake set-up. This set-up is only on E65/66(745 and 750I/LI) and E70(New X5)
