Not recommended. I don't understand why people do this. Because it affords them an extra half mile's worth of gas?

You should see the idiots from here in BC that cross the border to fill inWashington state. Squeezing every last drop till its spilling out the top, then rock the car side to side, squeeze in a few more drops. People are morons.

Terp,

This is not a good idea. Fuel needs room in the gas tank to expand. It can't do that when it's completely topped off-especially in the summertime, when the gas is dispensed at a warmer temperature.

I saw a guy at Costco fill up his RSX to the brim once. Like literally gas was sitting at the little metal flap or where it would be (i dont recall if the rsx comes with one..our TLs dont).

and this was a guy in his 40s if not 50s.

voted no, for reasons already mentioned.

Once I accidentally topped off because the pump would keep shutting off before it was full. When i pulled the nozzle out about 2 cups of gas fell on the ground. (this was before i had my TL). I never understood the point of topping off. You're not really saving money by doing it.

The moment the pump clicks off is when I put my car's fuel cap back on and place the pump nozzle back. No topping off.

It's bad for the car. Seems like I had to replace something on my 4Runner because I always topped off for 6 years and ~230,000 miles.

I never top off i always have 1/4 - 1/2 tank. here are my reasons valid or not
1. i play the gas gamble game. is going up or down tomorrow? which means more or less for that purchase
2. don't like the extra weight
3. top off could trigger engine light (at least in my other vehicles)
4. damn its to cold to be pumping full tank

As soon as it stops, I wait a few seconds and wiggle it around so it doesn't drip everywhere and then go off on my way.

AFAIK, the only issue with our cars is expansion (and of course, environmental concerns). I'm not aware of any components that can be damaged from gas sitting at the top of the filler neck (again, discounting expansion).

The owner's manual says not to top off to allow for expansion. Hence, discounting environmental concerns, on a cold winter day I don't know if it's a real issue assuming you drive long enough to bring the level down before entering an area of higher temps...

I top it off to the next 1/2 dollar. Just habit, less rounding in checkbook or small change in pocket. Does no harm.

Depends on how much time i have. I usually dont care for it.

But in the truck with 36 gallon tank, it never fills up all the way. Pretty much all the pumps stop at $99.99. I usually give it a couple more squeezes, takes an extra 10 sec.

I hate filling up gas. period. So i try to do what ever i can to avoid it for as long as possible.

Oh and in the Viper, pretty much none of the pumps work right. I have to sit there and constantly re-squeeze the pump until it fills up all the way. Dont know what the problem is.

Live in Oregon (station attendants), so I really hate filling up. They always try to top off the nearest .05 or so. One time the guy ended up gushing out a bunch of gas on the side of my car. Just wiped it off with a dirty rag like it was nuthin'....

Nope. Too much fuel doesn't allow for proper expansion. The extra fuel can go into fuel vapor return lines and contaminate the fuel vapor canister. Those can be very expensive to replace.

try flipping the handle around, my buddy had the same problem with his viper and I showed him this trick and problem solved.

my GTO was the same way, although it was never consistently a problem

Since the fuel vapor return valve is at the top of the gas tank and not the fuel filler neck, I don't see how this is true. You have proof of this?

yes. be 5 years old, have no idea about auto-stop feature, every time it stops resqueeze it for two minutes, finally gas is all leaking out the side of the car dripping all over the cement... dad looks over. Oh? it's good? Sweet, all done!

The vent tube is connected to the top of the filler neck. When gas is puking out the top it runs back down the vent line and ruins the canister vent shut valve.

Not according to the service manual. The vent tube just runs back to the gas tank. That's why I question if any real damage to components can occur from fuel reaching the top of the filler neck.

Good pic, I am thinking of an old service bulletin in regards to p1457 which was a flooded cannister vent valve having gas inside of it instead of vapors. Do you have access to that?

Only by doing an internet search. That appears to be for much older Hondas (Civics, CRV, Odyssey) and due to corrosion issues from salt. It would appear to be N/A for the 3G TL. There is no P1457 listed in the 2004 TL service manual.
