Do You Ever Park Like This?

It seems like everyday I get out of class, walk to my car, and notice that there is something wrong with my car. Either a dent, scratch, or some paint is newly added to my car via a car next to me.

I've started parking at the end of the row at school and parking in two spots. Not two regular full spots, but 3/4 in my spot and 1/4 in another spot that a car can't fit in.

Having a hard time visualizing this? Here is how I park at school:

I saw a Subaru behind me do the same thing:

And THIS is why I park the way I do. I came out of class and this Corolla parked next to me like this:

Am I the only one that does this?

Yeah. But I've often experienced that some people don't look at the parking lines and just pull next to the other cars in the spots.

I call those "safe" spots. You can get a little more safe room between a car on one side and there is no one on the other size.

Can't see the pictures, but if you're doing what I think you're doing, good luck at not getting keyed (or worse) by someone pissed off that you're taking 2 spots.
I totally agree with you though. I park my RSX in a commuter train lot every day and I notice a new ding at least once a week. Some people just take no pride or have any sense of courtesy whatsoever!

People are assholes, plain and simple. If there is a space that has that little 'dead zone' on one side of it, you bet I'll drift over a bit. But I will NEVER take up two spaces, that just pisses me off usually because the people who do it around here do it with shitty cars like an '80s Camaro with the paint peeled off.

well technically he's not taking up 2 spots, just 1 and then the "empty" space next to his. I do this at my school too but its harder for me cause theres pillars but at least it "saves" one side of my car from any potential damage. Plenty of people park like that at my school and I actively seek out these spots. No way am i parking my car in a compact spot

i do that also.
that doesnt look like a parking spot on the left tho.
if you were to take 2 ACTUAL parking spots it doesnt help cause there will always be an idiot that thinks YOU are the asswhole for parking like that. hell park in the 3/4 parking spot and accidently hit your door. lol

the point is to take 2 spots kinda far so that no idiot would wanna walk that distance !!!!

and to the OP, one spot and one unused spot is completely fine !!!! i dont think anyone should have any issues with that !!!!

Yes some times. I will also seek out those that park like that and park next to them partially sharing the 2nd spot they are taking up.

I do that all the time, well maybe not that extreme. I will mostly just keep my tires ON the line instead of passed it.

I look for "safe spots" every time I park the car. If I cant find one, I park way out in the middle of nowhere where I know no one else is going to park. Most people are careless when it comes to cars, or they dont teach kids not to swing open a car door into the car parked besides them. I put way to much time into my car to have a duffus hand me a car ding.

x2 here.

I hate looking out my office building and even though I'm out in the middle of nowhere, somebody will pull in the space right next to me! Happens every so often (not the same person either).

I want to go out with my key then...

As you can see I park in a regular spot and then a little chunk of asphalt at the end of the row. There is no way a car could fit there, therefore I pull a little bit into that spot. I never take up two full parking spots.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this

I try to whenever possible or park next to an island, pretty much on the curb. This has kept my car ding free until some asshole moved in next to me at my condo with a tahoe. He has dinged the hell out of my doors

I did give up parking way out though. I was at IKEA one night and parked way out despite the rain. I come out to see some bitch in a range rover push her cart out of the way and jump in her car. I was on the top floor of the garage and there was a grade down towards my car. The cart picked up speed and I helplessly watched it smash my fender cracking my headlight, dinging the fender, and cracking the marker. The bitch wouldn't stop so I threw a rock at her as she smiled driving away. Her car now says

R A (big ding) N G E R O V E R

And over here, spots are more narrow than the US, so I have to be careful and be sure it is not too close to a driving lane. I have a nice track record of no dings for three cars (Volvo, Acura, and the Subaru).

I get all the way over, but never technically outside of my space... even if it's dead space on the other side.

Now that is just asking for trouble. Sometimes when I see people parked like that and I'm in our beater (what we call our Home Depot truck), I'll back in so I can still get out no problem, but it squeezes them in.

I park at the ends everywhere I go. I usually don't leave the parking lot till I find a safe spot I am comfortable with. I usually head to school 2 hours before class to find parking

You could have parked much closer to the curb.

yeah i ALWAYSS do that when possible, its sad at my apt we have covered parking but i dont even wanna park there ne more cuz i've gotten 3 scratches from fat people opening their door all the way apparently and one long key mark from my gas tank to my whole back door

so now i kinda park like u and take that 1 1/2 parking spot in the back where i'm vulnerable to the elements... either way i lose but not as much when im not parking under there

If parking is sometimes difficult I prefer to park next to minivans. I know the kids are going to be a pain but most of the vans have sliding doors, which eliminate any chance of a ding. That, and moms generally put the kids in the back anyway so no one is getting in the front seat.

I always park that way at my college especially during the first couple weeks when it is very crowded. After that the college dies down a bit and I park in the very back where there is only a few cars near me.
