We've excitied to announce that we've begun a co-operative project with renowned industrial designer, Steve Eastwood (who's produced quite a few car renderings for us in the past), to do a visual study on a 21st century Datsun 510 concept rendering.
We're looking for ideas and feedback as to what our community members think "Neo-510" should be and look like.

I like the way it looks, but it doesn't have the appeal of the old 510s: interchangability... at least in California. You can't swap in an engine that is older than the car, but since Datsun 510s have a cult following because people swap in different engines and trannies, build and track the car, and since they're so light, they'll smoke a lot of cars. Very popular in autox. It does look like a toy, and will probably be one.
If that 510 comes out, I'm thinking it won't even be close to the 2000 lb. range. Anything is better than the Sentra and Versa though...

I think that alot of automakers are starting to making the switch back to rwd...
The buying public are over the gimmick that was used in the 80's to get people to buy into the hype that car companies were making FWD cars because they were safer... Sure they are better in the snow, but the bottom line is packaging. It's cheaper for a car company to make a fwd platform than a rwd platform... Car companies don't really care about much except how to make money...
I grew up with a kinds of rwd economy cars... 510s, Corollas, RX7s, Beetles, Pintos, Vegas,... etc, etc... Now it's mostly luxury brands that have RWD...

I remember reading somewhere that Nissan is considering bringing Datsun back to target the youth market like scion.
if that's the case, it would fit perfectly because of the size of the cars and they could be hella sporty.
