Daily Beater - 5K 30+ MPG
Hey all,
I just wanted to hear your suggestions on a reliable car for a long commute that'll do over 30 mpg, and under 5 grand.
On the top of the list right now are a 200X HOnda Civic.
Just wanted to see any other suggestions.
My 2000 Accord is on its way out and never sees over 25 mpg for some reason.

i just bought an 03 civic mt ex for 4400. I replaced the headlights$80, front and rear brakes$85, timing belt water pump $430, plugs/cabin air filter/misc $50.
The price of the vehicle was negotiated down to accomodate these fixes. The only thing that was unexpected was the a/c, it either needs to be recharged or replace some part that's not working well and a recharge. Hopefully it's the cheaper one.
It had relatively new tires, inspection and other maintenance and it had a clean interior with minimal dents/scratches.
For under 5k, i have a well maintained car that should last a while before any other maintenance.
I got 35mpg and almost 400 miles on my last tank of 87 octane gas. The tank is only 13 gallons too.
The seats took a little getting used to and it's surprisingly quiet inside with 157k on the clock.
It does tach around 3500 when at 75-80 mph, so that get s a little annoying.
The only thing i may do is to replace the headunit with something that i can hook up my i-pod and bluetooth to.

did not have much luck with the 05 civic ex-se, with MT. It had one annoying problem after another. Traded it with 36,000 (after the warranty was over) miles for the 06 tsx. Love that. We also owned a 05 hyundai elantra GT with MT (bought the same time as the honda) It had over 100,000 problem free miles when we traded it for a '11 hyundai sonata.
