Sounds like he was screwed already, if he gets in an accident tomorrow he's going to owe a lot more than the $500.00 for gap insurance, so it might come in handy if he is upside down on the car for the first year or two. Insurance is good for piece of mind and helpful when needed, but otherwise a waste.

Damn!!!! My parents a few weeks ago picked up a 2006 Accord EX-L for $22,700 OTD + taxes. They got it well below invoice after much haggling, so your friend's father got totally ripped off.
He should get a price prior to discussing a trade-in. After the price is agreed-to, then bring up the negotiation of the trade-in.
Hell, a 06 Accord LX invoice price is $18,749. At worst, he should not accept anything over $19,500 + $3k (Trade in gap) = $22,500 at most (with the trade-in)
