The Curious Anatomy of a Gallardo Fire

Original Story:
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...land-auto-show

For my lazy friends - Portland auto show staffer starts a (privately owned) Gallardo on fire by bouncing the engine off its limiter for minutes on end to empty the gas tank.

I thought car makers did stress tests like this on engines during the design phase. I read somewhere that all engines are revved at redline for hours at a time to determine reliability. They shouldn't catch fire certainly....

private owner should have known about how much gas should have been allowed in tank.

iirc, SEMA lets you only have 1/4 tank of gas or less in cars before entering or something like that.

i'm pretty sure other shows are no different.

Not really the case with these cars, esp. when the engines are built by hand & thus, can vary by car.

Even considering the vast majority of people are stupid, they really had to scrape the barrel to find that guy.

Some did not get that memo.
Production is different from the design world.

redline does not mean the same thing as bouncing off of the fuel cut.

"...the display staff decided it'd be a good idea to just sit in the car and rev it to redline in neutral."

How fast do you think they lost their jobs?

He got tired of revving it how does someone not love sitting in that car and just listening to the engine?

Have you still not read the article? They were staff members at the Portland Auto Show. Display staff to be specific. Owner of the Lambo has nothing to do with them...

So, why the low fuel deal at auto shows? Does it have to do with vapors?

No, Fire Marshall issue. In case of stupid people setting cars on fire - they all don't catch and have a bigger explosion with a full tank of gas.

The same reason cars being transported by train or ship only have enough fuel to get onto and off of the transport.

Although, I have seen a train car full of 8 brand new Ram 3500s catch fire. That was pretty cool and kind of depressing at the same time.

The ability to catch on fire in odd ways is standard equipment on all Italian cars. It's one of their government regulations just like having front airbags is in the US.

I'm sure they do. And when they do they make sure there is air flow over/around the engine, or via some other means keep it cool so it doesn't overheat.

It became an even bigger issue after 9-11.

Two morons in this story:

1. Staffer, for doing this.
2. Owner, for not taking the time to do this him/herself.

Jeez.
