My GF and I test drove a Cruze yesterday. The car is very solid and quiet. However, I'm not sure it has enough HP. I think it's 20 to 25 HP short. I believe it's coming off the possible contender list.

Other cars we are going to look at are the new Impreza, Focus and Jetta.

I've not driven the Cruze but I do like it's styling AND fuel economy. It's specs do betray a shortage of power but maybe some aftermarket massaging could bring the 1.4T up to the 160-190hp range which would be more than respectable.

 

They should have kept the Eco 2.2L 150 or so HP engine. It was frugal and a good engine. This new engine strategy in compact cars is a let down.

 

Don't like anything about the car. I'd probably just get a Ford Fiesta and be happier with a much better car.

 

I would wait until you can test drive the New Focus, I use to have a 01 Focus Hatch and aside from power that little thing had sports car steering feel. I think the new Focus form reading reviews is going to be a great handling car, maybe be better than the Mazda3 in that respect.

 

The Jet tah tah looks better, IMO.
