CR-V for my daughter's friend

Hey AZers, my daughter has a friend needing a small ute for her and her large dog to tool around in and I recommended a CR-V. That said, I don't know diddly-squat about small cross over vehicles as I have something nearing zero interest in vehicles of that ilk. Given many here are Honda fans, I'm thinking this might be a good forum to solicit some feedback on the CR-V and any problem areas to look out for. Her budget is in the $8,000 to $10,000 range so I'm thinking a third gen, or maybe an early fourth gen would fit the bill.

Any thoughts or comments?

At ~8-10K, that should get a decent CR-V. And they do have that amazing Honda reliability. I'd say try here to see what the issues are:

You can get a good CRV for that price. They are efficient and great SUVs.

IIRC, at least on the 2G, you may want to avoid AWD models. Diff needs service at a pretty low mileage interval & can fail if not serviced.

With the number of them I see around here every day, I can't imagine the failure rate is that high...

That said, the CRV is a solid reliable uninspiring appliance to move people and things.

Exactly why I don't know squat about them.

Get the auto transmission and avoid the CVT, which started with the 2015 model year, IIRC.

Also, is the dog to be transported in the rear in a crate?
If not, a small 4 door compact would be nicer to drive- Mazda 3, Civic, etc. while doggo gets the rear seat area.

My daughter has a 2012 CRV, but now wants something smaller, like a Civic or MX-5; she doesn't have a dog.

The 3G is probably Honda's least problematic vehicle of that vintage (to my knowledge).

I know the interior space is copious for a vehicle it's size and the resale is very strong.
