Coworker wanting to borrow my car ...
Just a quick rant.
One of the IT guys at work is a good (work) buddy of mine, and knows that I'm coming back to the states for four weeks and that my car is going to be sitting in my building garage during that time. His car is going into the shop for 10 days and so he asks me if he could borrow my car while i'm gone (2008 IS300 in mint condition which i baby the hell out of). I told him that I wasn't comfortable lending anyone my car especially out here in Dubai where who knows what I would be liable if he got into an accident with my car. This guy tried to convince me all day saying that he will be fully responsible blah blah blah. I dont get why some people just can't take a hint. I mean how many people do you know that would just lend their brand new car to you while they are out of the country? Even if nothing happens to the car, I dont want anyone beating on my baby. He says he wouldn't, but if I borrowed someone else's car, I would probably have a little fun with it, especially if I wasn't that close to them.
Am I being reasonable here? I mean i work hard for my money and this is the nicest car I've ever owned. I would be really pissed off if something happened to it (even if it was me that did it).
On a side note, one of my colleagues here went through a red light when making a turn (just turned red he said). A cop snapped his license plate and when he checked his plates online, he had a USD 750 fine, 12 points on his license, and just impounded his car for a month. Worst part is, they opened his driver side window before they took the keys and they wouldn't close it. Apparently, thats the additional punishment they give out here. There is so much sand flying around, that his car will be a beach when he gets it back. To give an example, if I wash my car on Thursday night, on Saturday afternoon, it will look the same as before i got it washed :-). These guys dont mess around!

Um, no you are doing the right thing.
If he was your friend/buddy/lover...the minute you said no or you werent comfortable with the idea, that should have been end of conversation.

Yes you're being reasonable. IMO, I never lend my car to anyone who is not either family or a close friend. (Girlfriends excluded from close friends.. they're in a category of their own..)
Next time just tell him that you're not sure if your insurance plan covers other drivers. Always works for me.

You are being totally reasonable. It's your car and you have the right to say who drives it. I would exercise extreme caution lending out my car, especially if I were in the area of the world you are currently in.

It's your car.
You're buds, but that doesn't mean you are under any obligation to furnish a car. lol

I would have to say NO. I've loaned a car to my sister, wife when she was my GF, and that's it. I've had one friend ask me and I told him he had to be smoking something to ask.

Question asked, question answered. What's the point of him trying all day to convince you. Tell him no means NO.
I think you're completely in the right.

You're overreacting. It's perfectly reasonable to lend a friend from work your mint condition brand new Lexus.

One of my coaches for football in college asked me to drive my car one night when we were at camp. We all had to stay in the dorms and shit and werent allowed out past a certain time and he wanted to take my car to the city and " get some bitchesssss ". I turned him down, then he offered 50 bucks, i took it as an insult and had to shut him down again.

You're right, don't let him borrow it. Of all the people that I know, there's only 2 I would lend my car to without hesitation... my brother and my dad - and my car is 7 years old! My dad's too old now to want to flog the crap out a car, and just because I can trust my bro and he'll have a good parking spot for it at his house.

The fact that he even asks the question implies he doesnt understand the importance to you that the car has.
I would never ask to borrow someone else's brand new car cuz I wouldnt want to be responsible if there was a scratch on it (unless said person was a sibling and the possibility of an extreme event like the car going up in flames, if by accident, wouldn't kill the relationship)
I would ask to borrow someone else's 10 year old car if I needed one though; although I would only ask if they were close to me (close friends or family) and if I thought they'd be comfortable; and I wouldnt ask twice.

failhard.
I've let my sister drive my car one day. It came back with the biggest dent it's ever gotten, and I'm talking 20+ dents on CL-S ..
My mom drove the car about 4, 5 times .. 3 of those times, the windshield had a new rock chip .. I suppose it's not necessarily her fault, but my mom and dad are bad luck when it comes to windshields on any cars they own.

I don't even let my gf of almost 5 years that I live with drive my car, not even my truck unless it's up the street to the store once in a blue moon

It's your car, do what your feel is right for you.
I do know 3 people that will let people borrow their cars. Of course they have enough $ to replace it if something happens. Nice new cars too. MB, Range rover, a supped up 500HP NOS equipped Jeep CJ7
This is why I have a 2nd junky car. So if someone needs a car I can let them have it.

I've allowed my nephew that lives with me drive all my cars and he's only 18. I've also said no on other occasions. It should and has to come down to the owner of the vehicle. No means no.

The weird thing is I know this guy who was in my auto class, and he let me drive his Evo IX.... TWICE!
and another dude let his friend drive his NSX until he spun out in it.

I had a friend of a friend allow me to play with his 360 Spyder for fifteen minutes on local back roads and the highway, shame to me for not having a camera. I'm dreaming of Ferraris every night since then...
