cops/towns and the economy

In your area(s) are you noticing more red light cameras, more "cheap shot tickets." I've noticed 2 more towns around me (that IRONICALLY both are broke) put up red light cameras.
- To me these towns and states aren't meeting budgets because Sales Tax is down. due people aren't buying stuff. so to "make budget" they are putting up these damn red light cameras and if you're 1 or 2 mph over the speed limit their giving you tickets.

Really? You can get your tractor to a high enough speed to trip a camera? My 9630 can barely hit 12 mph.

The camera's around my area are set to go off once you're going 11 mph over the limit. I doubt they're set to go off only going 1 to 2 mph over the limit.

Plus I thought your John Deer could only get up to 17mph?

Dont blow red lights then.

This ONE red light camera brought in 1 million dollars in 3 months!!

Installing red-light cameras at busy intersections is a growth industry, but one northwest suburban community has pulled the plug on a highly profitable camera amid worries a premier shopping venue was getting a reputation as a ticket destination.

Located at Meacham and Woodfield Roads near Woodfield Mall, the camera raked in $1 million in fines for Schaumburg between November and January.

The tickets came in a flood, some 10,000 of them, almost all for drivers not stopping before turning right on red. At $100 a ticket, the village's coffers were overflowing.

These Red Light Camera's are absolutely retarded. They are popping up all over the place. Just last week I almost was rear ended because I cam to an abrupt halt on a yellow. The intersection was so long, I would have definitely goten a ticket if I went through the yellow. I was watching my mirror and sure enough someone was right on my ass. Luckily they missed me and I moved up a bit as I saw them slamming on their brakes.

The City of Edmonton is proposing that most high volume intersections have both red light and speed enforcement cameras. One of the complaints is exactly what you have mentioned: An increase of intersection accidents because of drivers either slowing down or speeding up dramatically to avoid crossing the intersection during an upcoming light change.

that's what i'm saying. certain towns yellow lights are "reduced" to give out driver's tickets so they can make up for budget shortfalls.
I got nailed about 5-6 months ago by a red light camera even though i was in the intersection as the light was changing.100 bucks. i was making a left turn as i entered the intersection it was yellow. in the middle of the intersection it went red. still got a ticket in the mail.

it's not cameras that are nailing you on speed it's law officers.
law officers are being pushed by their commanding officers, which are being pushed by either town mayor or budget committee to "make money if you like your job." a lot of towns and goverments have cut jobs due to budget. I pay my taxes but just wise they(the goverments and towns) would adjust their budgets according to what their income is.

My wife and I both went 4+ years without being pulled over and now we've each gotten pulled over in the last month...

Her: ticketed for her headlights being too blue - they are stock 4300K DS2's on her FX. $142.
Me: Ticketed for unnecessary acceleration as I entered an interstate from an on-ramp with no merge-lane...never breaking the speed limit mind you. $184.

It's really very frustrating.

Surprisingly no. The parking tickets have been 15 dollars for as long as I can remember. Haven't heard of anyone in my town complaining more than usual.

SF has jacked up the parking tickets and seems to be giving them out regardless of whether they are warranted. Although they did reduce street cleaning which seems weird.

If I got a ticket for stock headlights I'd contest it, buy new lights if they are cheaper than $142, then go to court and tell them the story and show them the receipt and see what comes of it.

"unnecessary acceleration"? I've never heard of that. That sounds like the world's easiest ticket to beat.

That's just it, they're not blue at all.
They are just standard (stock) HID headlights and I think sure 4300k is as low as you can go, so buying new headlights won't do me any good.
I've got a court date in mid-June to fight it - yeah, mid-June.

I've heard of people getting it for pealing out at a stoplight or fishtailing around a corner, but for accelerating onto a freeway without going over the speed limit is just ridiculous. I just got it two days ago, so I need to do some homework on whether I fight it or just pay it. Mr. Officer told me if I just paid it it wouldn't get sent to my insurance...but I'm pretty sure it doesn't just work like that...

bgsmith: the towns or districts you got these "bull shit" tickets in are they broke or struggling(moneywise)? e.g. laying off people, not doing as much public involvement or public affairs.

Fight both of them. It's far safer to merge at a higher rate of speed than to merge slowly, your more visible to other drivers and are less likely to get rear ended. Headlight ticket sounds like a very easy win. It's not even something that's up to the officers discretion, it says 4300k, it's 4300k. Pretty sure you can legally have up to 6000k in most states.

We don't really have a whole lot of red light cameras, but maybe we should. A lot of the busiest intersections by the shopping districts attract any and all kinds of retards who give themselves a pat on the back when they just barely cross the line at an intersection one tenth of a second before it hits red.

I actually ran a red once out of frustration with a shitty light once, but that's about it.

Cops across the Chicago suburbs are cracking down a LOT. I've seen more people pulled over in the past few weeks than i have in the past few years combined.

I personally got a ticket while parked in a Dominick's parking lot for "illegal license plate cover". I went to fight it and was told that in Des Plaines, you may not have any cover on your license plate, even if it is crystal clear like mine (it keeps the salt off my plate and was perfectly clean that day). $50 gone for absolutely no reason.

Chicago is horrible with the cameras. They just keep coming and according to several news reports, are supposed to keep being installed until a 2012 target where every major intersection has one.

I got 2 red light tickets back in 2006. They are triggered by your tire crossing the white stop line on red, then show a pic of your car in the middle of the intersection on red and then a close up of the plate number. If you enter the intersection on yellow, even if the light is red when you exit the intersection, you will NOT get a ticket. (at least that's how it works in Chicago).

The funny thing about the red light cameras is they work...for a while, then people get used to them and the revenue drops like a rock. In several parts of the country where they have had them for a while, they have started removing them because Police revenue is just totally gone.

The real truth is they WANT you to speed and they want you to run red lights, at least some of the time, so that they can make money. If the enforcement is too good, they never catch anyone, and that money goes away. in the meantime they still have to pay the company that runs the red light cameras, which eventually cost more money to run than they bring in.

Case in point Dallas Texas:

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/0...-removing.html

Red light cameras do reduce accidents. That is a good thing ... But they do it by reducing red light violations, by as much as 29 percent from month to month at particularly busy Dallas intersections. ... City Manager Mary Suhm estimated last week that the city would fall short by more than $4 million. So last week, the city turned off about a quarter of the least profitable cameras, saying it couldn’t justify the cost of running them."
