Just get it done......I got my Lexus done at 108K and the belt was dry rotted....made me pretty nervous and happy that I had it done at the same time.

i still don't understand why don't you just get it done...

if you still need to sell this angle to your wife, i would say that if she is the driver of this car, and the timing belt were to go, i would have a concern of putter her, as well as your son's life in danger...

i understand that when the TB snaps, it does not suddenly hault the car, but if she were on the highway or stuck in a position where she could not safely get over to the shoulder, that would be pretty dangerous...

and to be quite honest, its not like this $700 bill is yearly...

personally i would just do it, and deal with her bitching afterwards...

You have two options:

1) Take it in anyway and tell her you're going to have them change the blinker fluid.
2) Wait until it breaks and when she asks you to come pick her up, tell her to find her own ride.

No offense to gatrhumpy and the women on this board but this is the stereotypical female approach to automotive maintenance. But seriously man, is this her approach? Why would you spend $3,000 when $700 will do? Why replace those pesky shingles on the roof? Wait until it collapses. Who pays the bills for this car? You or her? If it's you, get it done. My

She basically said, "Well, we'd save $1,000 in not having it done now, and we'd save money and pay $3,000 for new engine replacement when it (the timing belt) does fail."
So she'd rather spend $3000 later on rather than spend $700, which you stated what it would actually cost, right now to prevent having to spend $3000?!?!

She does not believe me when I told her that we could pay $700 for a water pump and timing belt replacement, including labor, and have brand new parts, rather than pay $3,000 for a brand new engine once the water pump or timing belt fails.

For her satisfaction, what are the consequences of a timing belt and water pump failure?
my wife is like that... god... is she asian too?
