Three Wheelin'
- G37-Nice sports sedan but it's "sell by" date has expired
- IS350 - Tight living quarters and also long in the tooth.
- Chrysler 300 - Don't knock it till you try it - the new one is pretty impressive but a little on the large side
- GS350 - I have one (the TL is my wife's car.....really, it is!) GS is nice, but even I admit it's due for a change. See the Lexus forum if you want to know more about it - there is pretty good information out now and it will be introduced next month. There are actual pics of the interior on the forum
- Hyundai Genesis - If they created a separate brand it would own the market. If you don't mind telling people you own a Hyundai this is the car most of us should own.
- ES350 - This car would be fine for your mother. Way too soft and feminine
- BMW (any BMW). I like them, but the ones worth having cost quite a bit more than an Acura. I'm not buying a BMW to get the "...28" engine.
- Mercedes - yes, they actually do make a car in this price range (C class). Probably a nice car, but I don't need people thinking I'm not really rich but I want them to think I am because I have a Mercedes (all due respect to Janis Joplin)

I suspect that whether they want to admit it or not, most people wind up in a pretty narrow price band. Rather than all the answers above, I'll state my thoughts....

I test drove the g37 and found it to be not as responsive as the TL. What do you mean by "sell by date" do you mean its just outdated in design?
The BMWs i looked at were just too over priced for what you got in them. The TL seem to give the most of the money.

The competition is whatever you want it to be. Don't let someone else put their own limits (price, size, brand bias, etc) on it for you. Also, it's a terrible idea to ask cross-shopping questions on a brand-specific forum. Find a few cars you like and join the most active forums for those.
You can start with websites like:
http://www.edmunds.com/new-cars/
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/index.jsp
http://amexnetwork.zag.com/new-car.html
to filter through various makes and models based on your own limits or preferences. If the cars you're interested in span the range $35k to $75k and you can afford that, stick with it. Or if you're interested in both sedans and SUVs, stick with it. Don't let these silly categories people have created limit you. There are a lot of really interesting vehicles out there, in many categories.

I was being sarcastic....I own a TL SH-AWD and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!
Being serious and going back to the OP..
The TL is a some sort of cross-segment car....as the Acura official press relase, it competes with both the high end of the Infiniti G, BMW 3 Series, MB C Class and Audi A4/S4 offering (on price and some features) and the the entry-mid level of the Infiniti M, BMW 5 Series, MB E Class, Lexus GS and Audi A6 offering (size, capabilities especially with the TL SH-AWD and features) The Hyundai Genesis is a competitor too, as the Cadillac CTS,
You can view the Nissan Maxima, the top trim of the Mazda 6, the Lexus ES and the incoming Hyundai Azera as competitors too of the TL FWD.
Even if many that are influenced by marketing gimmicks may disagree, you can see the fully loaded TL SH-AWD Tech as a competitor of the Audi A7 as well, same size, performance and technical content....well you can outtech the TL with an A7 but you need to shell out north of 70K....

jjsC5 has it down correctly.
I looked at the exact same crowd, came to the exact same reasoning. Almost bought the IS250 too, but needed more space. Then it was down to the TL and an E350.
And competition is all relative. Price, luxury features, status, performance. My TL was bought for the wifey. If it were for me personally, it may have turned out differently.
