Chrysler to guarantee gas at $2.99 a gallon! For three years!
from Autoblog: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/05/c...r-three-years/
Who needs an 18-cent a gallon gas tax holiday from pandering politicians when you have Chrysler on your side! With gas prices rapidly approaching and exceeding $4 a gallon across the nation, Chrysler is offering up a deal that just might make people averse to the looks of cars like the Chrysler Sebring and Jeep Compass think twice. Between now and June 2, anyone who buys any new Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicle will be able to register for a "Let's Refuel America" card. Once the customer registers a credit card with the program, they will receive a new card that they can use the card at participating gas stations to fuel up their new car or truck. When the card is used, the credit card the owner has on file will be billed $2.99 a gallon for either regular gas, E85 or diesel fuel. Chrysler will pay the difference. The best part is the price is locked in for THREE years. Now that's real savings. There are of course limitations on the deal. Get more details on the deal and Chrysler's full press release after the jump.
[Source: Chrysler]
SRT models, Vipers, Crossfires (they are still around?) and Sprinters are excluded. Also, when you buy the car your card will only be eligible for the pricing for the fuel the car uses. If you buy a diesel truck you can only buy diesel fuel. Similarly gas or flex fuel cars can only get gas or E85. If you buy the opposite fuel you'll be charged the full price plus and extra $2 transaction fee. There are also annual fuel allotments based on 12,000 miles a year of driving and the EPA sticker mileage.
The card can be be used to fuel any car and if the car is sold within the three years, the owner can keep the card and continue buying fuel at the discounted price. This is one hell of a deal, if it doesn't drive Chrysler into bankruptcy, which is a distinct possibility. Because there is no way of knowing what fuel costs will be over the next three years, Chrysler can't estimate the cost. However, Steven Landry, Executive Vice President - North American Sales said the company is doing some hedging to protect themselves. If the price of fuel dips below $2.99 customers can just pay with another card or cash. The program kicks off on Wednesday May 7, 2008.

I wouldn't mind the 300 SRT-8 but that's about it. With that gas guzzling, you'd need the gas at $2.99/gallon... I wonder if that includes premium?

Nothing of Chrysler's interests me anyway. Too bad.

Wouldn't hurt to get a couple quotes just to see where they are on price, if you're that interested.

I have checked out the quotes. I will make out fairly well on a used one. I pay less than $300 a month for the Pathfinder. The payments on a new Pacifica with similar options as our Pathfinder will be about $550 a month since we have no real down payment right now. Not worth it.

I would need more incentive than this to buy my least favorite domestic brand. I would be more tempted with a GM (read: Pontiac G8 or Caddy CTS) offering like this.

Crap. I wish they had this deal when I bought my Pacifica in 2005. The crazy part about it is if they offered this card in 2002-2003 when gas was $1.65 people would think they were crazy.

I even heard the Benz R class which the Pacifica based off of is getting the axe.

They would have done great by adding a nice v8 like the one in the lincoln. I rode in an excecutive limo (black car taxi) in Newark last week and you could not hear the engine when the car was at idle and it was barely perceptible while cruising. I had to look up and see if the driver turned the car off.

regarding what I said about M.B.R class being axe'd... I think I read somewhere that it may NOT completely be gone... but the "R Class" may be back in a total different design... a true "crossover" (yes another crossover) to rival the X6/FX

Well, it has '87 Octane' on the picture of the card suggesting there might be a specific grade that will approve. It's probably based on the car you get. If the car you get requires premium, it will be one for premium.

these people don't realize that the price of gas will go back down below $3 in the next year or so. so this deal is good for a while.
if you average a tank a week @ 15 gallons and say 22-24 mpg, and say $3.60 a gallon now, not considering that the prices will fall. lets assume that the price stays @ 3.60 a gallon for a year.
15 gallons x 3.60 = $54 x 52 weeks= $2808
15 gallons x 2.99=44.85 x 52 weeks= $2332.20
2808-2332.20=$475.80
i know that is decent savings but that make it seem like you are going to save thousands of dollars.
people don't realize that gas will go under 2.99 a gallon sometime in the next year................we hope...........

Unless demand declines substantially (or at least oil speculators are made to think demand is declining as such), the future for is bleak.....unless of course you are long crude.

My dad would probably consider it except for one reason. He has a '98 diesel (which has been a really good vehicle for him) and would probably consider getting a new diesel because of this offer, but ever since Dodge switched from using the Cummings diesel, supposedly there has been some problems and failures and whatnot. He'd rather just stick with what he knows works.

Chrysler criticized for $2.99 gas, Suzuki jumps on bandwagon
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/06/c...-on-bandwagon/
Suzuki announcing its own free gas deal. For vehicles purchased between May 1st and June 30th, Suzuki is offering 0% financing and three months of totally free fuel in its "Free Gas for Summer" program. Buyers will basically get a stored-value credit card that's charged with a different amount of money depending on the model purchased.
