Chevy Tahoe or Ford Expedition . . .
as a rental for a trip to Death Valley Nat’l Park? Want to take something else this time so we can go to the “race track” & Titus Canyon. Don’t care about gas mileage; company credit card.

The new Tahoe...if you can get one as a rental.

Neither, I'd go for a Durango; I think Dollar Car rents the Hemi ones. Or even better yet you can rent a Dodge Magnum RT with a Hemi from Hertz, those things are fun to open up on the highway.

Tahoe hands down. Plus It will get better mileage (less stopping)

Wow, why the anti-Ford bias? We own an 03 Expedition Eddie Bauer, and it's our third Expedition (98, 99, 03) The Tahoe's restyling for 07 is four years late to the Ford styling party, and they can't duplicate the Expy's power fold third row and rear power vent windows. What the heck is a "power fold and release" second row on the Tahoe when I still have to manually remove the split third row to gain space in the rear?
Well, you're renting instead of buying, so just rent with whoever's cheaper, regardless of which brand they stock. I think the Tahoe is just playing catch-up. Now, the Yukon Denali and Escalade are a different story, with their equipment and power level.

The Tahoe delivers smoother excelerations and more low end power. It is a more comfortable seating position, and roomier cockpit. Its drives a lot nicer.
I hated the expedition when I got in the drivers seat...it feels really high, and doesnt put you in a good seating position..its hard to look round to your blind spots...specially when the headrests are one big part of the seat. It had no balls on the low end. and for such a big car why were my knees knocking against the door panels (im short at 5'8" but with long legs and I sit pretty far back.)
So, ford loses. I dont believe the older gen denalis had anymore power then the tahoes...but this model year does.

It's hard to go wrong with either.

When I had a tahoe rental I had a lot of fun driving it. And it didn't bog under weight (equipment in the back.)
Its preference...and my preference is nuts to Ford. I had the same feelings after driving a rental explorer 2 year ago. Didn't like it, and it SUCKS when it has weight in it.

My brother gets a new Eddie Bauer Expedition every 2 years. I like the Expedition, it feels solid and well built to me. What I don't like is the steering is way overboosted and I agree with Sarlacc with it being underpowered - the 5.4 just doesn't feel torquey enough. I've pulled my boat behind it (both his 1st and 2nd gens) with me and 3 others and the power is only adequate. A positive is that for the 3 or 4 Expeditions he has had, nothing ever went wrong with them requiring a trip to the dealer. Of course he only had around 40K on them when he turned them back in to the dealership.

Again, if you had the 4.6 V8 I'd agree power-wise, but the 5.4 is a different animal. But, you say you're not a Ford man, so that may be coloring your views. I love GM, I love Ford, not much of a Chrysler fan, but I know that good product is good product. The Expedition is good product with many features not even available on the Tahoe.
It was not a good driving experience. I did not enjoy or like it.
The interior was nice enough, and the space in the back to work out of was decent. It got us off road and where we needed it to. It did its job. Would I own one? No. I personally find the Tahoe to be much more fun and pleasurable drive. As for the engine. I have no clue, but since it was a rental I assume the smaller one then.

(by about 5mpg on the hwy)
