Car suggestions to help my friend out

My friend really, really needs a new car of some sort. He is driving a 94 Prelude now which he paid 4000 for a year ago. It's starting to fall apart and he's gonna end up putting too much money into it than it is worth to keep it running. His power steering pump was replaced a week ago, and for some reason the new pump doesn't work so he has no power steering and since he bought/installed it himself he can't get his money back. There's also some more maintenance that needs to be done but i can't think of what it was off the top of my head.

Problem is he needs/wants something that has a long warrante so he won't have to spend anything in repairs. We've suggested kias, but he really doesn't want to be seen in a kia. He 18 and works retail with me and brings in around 1k a month so he doesn't have a large amount to spend. His payment needs to be less than 250 a month and it can't be a car that would raise his insurance too much. He doesn't care if it's new or used as long as there is a warrante, and he doesn't care if it's auto or standard.

I've suggested a new or used Focus, and he's really liking used Cobalts.

Any suggestions i should give him? His budget is around 10k or less.

Slightly used Civic? They're reliable and safe, wouldn't be a PITA to repair all the time.

I've looked at used civics before and for 5-8K you can usually find some nice ones out there.. With a budget of 10K you can probably get something a few years old.
