Car purchasing question...need help.

My gf is looking to purchase a car, but we don't know what the process is since its kinda a unique situation. Here is the background:

- She only has a permit (yes, she got lazy and didn't follow through with getting a license)
- She is 22 about to turn 23
- Her permit is in NY
- She wants to purchase a car in this state

Can she purchase a car with just her permit?
Where would she get the car registered?

Anything else I should think about in this situation. Please let me know, thanks!

WIL

btw. if this is too little information, please let me know what else you would need.

Tell her to go get her license first. Be kinda silly if she doesnt pass the driving test but already paid for a car.

Then she can buy a car wherever she likes but would have to register it in NY at a DMV.

You don't need a drivers license to own a car, but it is useless unless you have one.

Register the car in her state of residence.

She should have her DL before she purchase it. She will more than likely need it to buy a car and will definately need it to register the car and insure it. She SHOULD register and insure the car in the state of residence. Unless she can register and insure it using her parent's address as her home address.

Since when do you need a driving license to own a car? I've lived in different countries and that's never the case.

Kinda hard to get auto insurance without a license and can't register the car without auto insurance (well at least in Jersey you can't).

My thought exactly. Unlikely she's got insurance and unless paying cash, the loan will require it.

I guess technically you can buy one, but it will have to be a cash deal and you won't be able to get it on the road.

Owning a car is different than getting it on the road.

I really wasn't trying to be a smarass guys, but some people might have the genuine question of "do you need a license to own a car?" and the answer to that is "NO".

Owning a xar for 99% of us is retarded if you cannot drive it on a public road.

I wasn't trying to be a smartass either. Just stating my opinion. The person that posted the thread asked a question. That was part of my answer.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured it would be difficult to get the thing on the road without insurance and that would be the problem.

She could use it and have it to practice driving in...with me in it of course right? Man, it's been awhile since I had to think about this stuff. At least she doesn't have to taken the classes...she can just go take the driver's test.

You would think it would be that easy to convince her of that, but she wants to take the 5 classes to bring down her insurance and get some more practice since she never drives and has really only driven in Rochester, NY.

1. So, how is she going to pay for this car? She's not likely to get a loan WITHOUT a DL. So unless she pays cash....it ain't gonna happen.

2. Driving a car, even to practice without insurance is a dumb idea. Let her drive your car to practice. And like we said before, she ain't getting insured without a DL.

3. Even if you are in the car, she cannot legally practice on any road without the car being registered. She cannot be the registered owner without a DL in most states, and she's not likely to register the car in your name. So that option is also out.

4. It is still in her best interest to take a class since it may reduce her insurance rates.

I really DON'T see why she doesn't just go get her DL and then buy a car. Why does it have to be ass backwards?

Wil, call your insurance agent. They should know all the ins and outs of getting around the MA DMV issues.

I don't think you need a license to own, register and insure a car... To register a car, you need insurance, so that's where I'd start asking questions...

She definitely needs to get her MA permit if she's living in the Commonwealth now...

Why is there some much confusion.

1) License
2) Purchase car
3) Get insurance
4) Drive

Yes, but luckily she can't drive a manual

We would most likely just use my old Integra for her to learn on until she gets her license and stuff. She is having her driving record faxed over right now from NY and then we'll be heading to the DMV tomorrow morning to get it switched over. We're doing as much as we can to get this process moving because getting to work has been a whole production so far...let's just say her roomie is getting annoyed that she has to drive her all the time...
