Car Insurance

Currently, I'm a Progressive customer, and have been for about 9 months or so. Well I just went to the Allstate site and got a quick quote, and for my current situation and any situation I see myself in in the foreseeable future, it's a bit cheaper, well 5% or so (same coverage levels of course). I'd rather not be bothered with switching, but money talks.

Are there any downsides to changing insurance companies this often for 5-10% cost reductions? Will playing hardball or just asking if I'm eligible for any discounts with Progressive get me anywhere?

Shop around...that's pretty much the only way to get the best deals. No insurance company will give you a discount unless you qualify for the discount, so you can't "deal".

I was with Allstate until they wouldn't give me OEM parts for a repair (it woudl've cost them only about $30 TOTAL for the repair since the repair price was $280 and I had a $250 deductible...instead they wanted me to go to a shop that would do it for $260, so their outlay would only be $10)...this was after being with them for 5 years without any accidents or tickets or claims.

Then I got Progressive for 2 weeks when I got my M, then switched and saved about $300 for 6 mo. switching to State Farm, then saved another $200 for 6 mo. switching to Geico when the SF policy was finished...and this is within the last year. And this is without qualifying for any new discounts.

When you turn 25 or get married, your rates will really go down, but go shopping and don't get too loyal with any insurance company...but DO stay away from ones that burn you.

shopping around won't hurt. You're right, in the end money is money.

I recently changed from AAA to mercury and saved over $1k/yr and it'll go down even more when our policy renews in march.

Also certain insurance agencies offer discounts, for instance, Mercury offers a discount is you are a computer scientist, whereas AAA didn't, so that's another 15% I can save on my policy with Mercury.

Be sure to read all the information with whatever company you may switch to.

I'm going to be switching in a week or so. My current insurance company is jerking me around. I got new cars 2 weeks ago and haven't gotten paperwork from them yet, so both cars are not inspected by the DMV or for full coverage. And on top of that they are telling me the rate will be about $1000 more than State Farm. It sucks though, because next year I would have qualified for a 10% discount.

When evaluating insurance companies, it's very important to hear what their current customers say. I've been with New Jersey Manufacturers for several years and I've never heard a bad word about them. I wouldn't switch now even if the rates were cheaper at another insurance company (I've looked and the difference is neglible).

Do you know if NJ Manufacturer's allow a new driver to be on the policy or will they toss me over to NJ Re? My wife's license expired a couple years ago and she just got a new one.

I'm in the process of suing NJ manufacturer's and they are F*c*ing Scumbags...

If Unitrin Direct is available in your area give them a shot. I saved nearly 20% switching over.

Well you know you to get coverage with NJM you have to be:

- Currently employed by a member organization of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association; or
- Currently employed by the State of New Jersey; or
- The named insured or resident spouse on a current or previous NJM policy for Personal Auto or Homeowners; or
- A current or previous operator of a vehicle insured under an NJM Personal Auto policy.

Does anyone know if Progressive gives a small discount once you turn 23? One sales rep on the phone said they did, another said they didn't.

I have no problem doing what mrdeeno did, I was just skeptical if there were any downsides to doing it. thx everyone.
