Car I'm considering that NO ONE is talking about.....
I was checking ebay yesterday as I tend to do. I love the new CTS and the V model is simply awesome, but it is still very expensive. This got me wondering about the STS-V. It too has a supercharged V8 with almost 500hp (469 to be exact), looks very good (the current CTS' forebear), and has alot of performance goodies (Brembos all around, LSD, stiff springs, etc). The CTS-V has gotten alot of attention around here and for good reason, but why no love for its older brother?
The more I checked it out, the more I liked it. The interior is fairly nice (not as good as the CTS but good). The power is more than adequate (most tests have it in the upper 4-second range to 60 and low to mid 13's through the 1/4 mile). It also is a big car which could definitely come in handy. And while you'd be lucky to find a CTS-V for $65k, a 2006 STS-V can be had for as little as $21k on Ebay. I find that price astonishing for what you get. Think about it. What else is available that has that kind of performance with that kind of luxury and technology for that kind of price?
The STS-V came only one way from the factory: Loaded. You get an 8 inch screen with HD nav and a DVD player. Keyless entry and start (with remote start). Heads up display. 15 speaker Bose surround sound stereo with DVD-a playback. Bluetooth, Trip computer, and heated seats all around (yp, even in the back).
I really, really like this car the more I think about it. I might consider trading in the old Ford. What do ya'll think?

A review I found: http://reviews.cnet.com/sedan/2006-c...-31851420.html
200 lbs. heavier than the M5, not a sedate, restrained car for in-town driving, Navi may be so-so. I'd probably prefer the STS-V to an SUV, though.

That's the kind of car my dad would probably drive.... he loves big Cadillacs. On paper and in the pictures, it just seems like the CTS-V is just a way better car all around. STS-Vs brand new are like what, almost $80,000? It has to be at least $70,000. Hey, at least the resale can't get much worse than that.
Seems to me like its more of an impulse car than anything. Just because you can pay for it and you think you like it right now doesn't mean you should.

As far as performance and equipment goes, I think you get a lot for your dollar as well.

I'd sacrifice power and get a pre-owned M instead. I checked them out and still have the typical poor quality GM interior, there is a reason they tanked so much in value. Not to mention it may only be low 20's to purchase but you are still paying to repair a $70k+ dollar car, and trust me, it will need repairs.
I think the home-run in car for the buck are a few year old SL's you can find a few year old SL with stupid low miles for high 20's, if you dip into the 30's you are getting a great car. However, as I said above, what scares me is the potential repairs.

cts-v is a nice ride a friend of mine is a used car manager and he used one as a demo. they are really strong. i also like the fact of comfort in a fast car and its styling is clean and fresh. another reason i like them and say go cts is due to seeing one with a stroked ls7 in it ! cts>sts IMO

*Edit: Just read your post again and realized you're probably talking about the first-gen CTS-V. To that I would say that the STS is a much better buy due to the superior interior/exterior styling and the supercharged Northstar V8. Sure any number of mods can fitted to the LS7 but outta the box the STS's engine is superior. Plus there are alot of luxury items on the STS-V that are not available with the CTS-V....

STS-V=NOT a grandpa car and anyone who says it is is smoking either crack or the STS-V's exhaust.
My MIL has an STS and the interior is VERY nice. Not as nice as my RL, but good enough. I thought about purchasing that instead of a new CTS-V, but the CTS is more my size and is a better implementation of what's already in the STS.
Even so....at $21k..... if I were in the market,

who cares about resale value and warranties...might as well drive the car to the ground.

heck, you only need the car to last 3-4 years to get your monies worth. the car is basically new. if you were to lease it for 36 mo. you would be paying about 20k just to use the car and give it back.

Yeah, but that $25k CTS is a V1 CTS-V. The V2 CTS-V is and I will eventually have one.....just want to wait for a) bankruptcy to happen or not, b) first year problems to run their course, and c) economy to improve.

Man those Caddy's really lose value quick, huh? What a bargain and with a 5 year/100000k mile warranty. These listings are getting my mind moving when it comes to finding a new car in a few years.

To the OP, I would totally get the STS-V, it's a good compromise between speed, power, luxury and cost. I can't think of a car that would compete in any of those catagories. Except an S2000, but it's acceleration wouldn't compare, but it has more reliability and better handling, but it is also smaller. Ultimately these are issues you would need to sort out.
Performance, cost, luxury, reliability, and aesthetics.
