A car for a birthday gift?

Has anyone ever bought someone a car as a present before?

Here's the deal- My fiance's 30th birthday is on the 7th of next month. I was planning on taking her on a lovely cruise but then we found out she was pregnant. It will be 7 months in Sep. so a cruise is definitely out. I did a little research on gifts but didn't have much luck. Massages/Day Spa's are also out. This year, I've already gotten her a new flatpanel TV, computer, digital camera, and a new baby. I ask myself, what else is left!?

Then it hits me- she hates her new Maxima SE that she got in February. She wants a new 07 Tahoe or I was thinking about an 06 Navigator since they can be had at a great deal (and I like them better than the 07's).

So, if I prearrange it- I can borrow her car for the afternoon (make an excuse) and go trade it in. If I put enough money down, I can keep her payments the same.

Right now, I can get a loaded 07 Tahoe for 11K off with no hassle plus they will give me full Kelly Blue Book Retail for her Maxima. The 06 Navigators are about 15K off plus 0% APR for 72 months.

What do you think?

BTW, to answer the question, my neighbor bought his wife a Solstice for Mother's Day. He arranged it with the dealer and used his cell phone for communications. They found one for him the week before Mother's Day (he decided to do this kind of last minute) and arranged it to be delivered to the dealership the Saturday before Mother's Day. When we went to pick it up we lied and said I needed his help at my parent's house to help move some big furniture to get him out of the house without his wife suspecting. When we got home I put it in our third garage bay overnight.. and the next morning he put it in their driveway with a bow. She was sooooo happy and completely surprised.

Now for his 40th birthday she wants to surprise him with a new Lexus ES350, so looks like I'll be part of another scheme

BTW, that is a great gift For my 30th my wife got me a country club membership, so I'm out golfing about 2-4 times per week. She gave it to me early (July) so I could enjoy it right away instead of waiting until December.

But I say go for it... she's only 30 once

Damn, she's about to give birth and you guys just realized she's pregnant! Wow! That's a good present to give, especially with the addition to the family. I like the Navi, but the Tahoe is cool too. Do it!

I was the one trying to talk her into a loaded Sienna or Oddy- she's not digging the minivan thing.

Easy, there are people whom have excelled and have good paying jobs or there are people whom are in debt up to their eyeballs and live paycheck to paycheck. The later is most likely, since America is a debt driven society. I had this exact conversation with my father this weekend. Anyone can get a car loan with decent credit and they give away credit cards.

In order to trade in the car, you'll need the title, and I believe she has to sign the back of it. At least here in Texas.

My mother handed me down her Oldsmobile when I graduated college, and when I traded it in for the TL I had to get Dad to sign the title, since it was in his name.

This is assuming the Maxima is paid off. If not, not sure what documents you'll need.

living the dream baby.. why not an expedition, h2, escalade, or any of the other soccer mom mobiles

a new car would make a great gift- and its practical because you will probably need some space with the new addition

borrow the car for a day, take it to the dealership, have them gaurantee a trade-in price in writing, and get the suv. After you suprise your wife, come in and sign away the old car. done and done

Hmm, if you added your name to the title, wouldn't this solve all of your problems?

Just say that you're going to help her make her car payments from now on, and wanted your name on the title.
