Can't talk the wife into an RL, so 3 or 5 Series BMW

We have a Denali XL, and it is costing us about $500 a month in gas, so she has decided that we should dump it.

What do you recommend, 3 Series would save us a few bucks, 5 series a little larger, but will cost about 10k more.

Wish I could get her into a an RL.

What's the family size status? If you have a few kids and plan on using the car to take the kids places, I wouldn't recommend the 3 series, it's a bit tight. The 5 series is definately roomier, but I can think of so many other cars that would be cheaper, roomier and better overall, depent on certain factors, of course

Well why don't you tell us a little bit about your purchase priorities? Why didn't you wife like the RL? How about the TL? How about selected Lexus (the GS, maybe?) Do you drive in snow? Do you place performance and handling over roominess/comfort?

Ain't nothing wrong with a 3 series... but if she drives in snow, the FWD TL might be a better choice...

I was in the same position as you recently.. we had the new body style Escalade and the gas was killing us!! it wasnt that bad in the beginning, but it got out of hand. We drive far to work and with traffic, gas was on top of our list for bills each week! Having to fill it up felt terrible. She wanted a TL and sure enough we got a white diamond pearl 05 a month ago. Best move we have made with no regrets! We also have 2 daugthers and the 3 series cars are TOO small. You can get a little more with the purchase of a new TL with all the accessories, HP, and so on vs a BMW. We played it safe!

Out of all the ones mentioned in this thread, my own wife only likes the 3 & 5 series with an 'honorable mention' of the new Lexus GS. I'd get the M45 Sport and NOT look back (except to see who's trying to keep up. )

A little about us

2 Adults 1 Child maybe one more, we live in Huntington Beach, CA so snow isn't a issue.

Like to switch cars every few years, she is currently in a Denali XL, loaded with custom DVD system.

She likes the name brands, luckly only when it comes to cars. So the RL just isn't cool.

We currently own a TL, which is my daily driver.

I will talk to hear about the m35, looks good for 47k.

I say go for the GS. I love mine. I noticed someone above mentioned driving in snow. If that is a concern, the GS430 comes standard w/ VDIM and should be able to get around quite well. Otherwise, you could go for the GS300 and get AWD.

Here are some threads at another site stating the benefits of VDIM on snow covered and/or icy roads (if you are interested):

Here's a link to a GS thread w/ lots of pics. including my car near the bottom of page 19:

Forget about buying new, especially if you're gonna turn in the car in a few years. Look for a CPO'd '03 E39 5-series.

If you get the Lexus GS, get the 300, since the whole point is to save gas and most women aren't real 'drivers', so it doesn't have to be fast.
