Can you change a starter???

I can't... my honda civic makes a horrrible noise when I crank it, its like a screeching/grinding noise and wont turn over

I'm assuming its the starter,....how do I replace it? is it straight forward? bold off bolt on??

is there anything I should particularly be aware of???

Its very straight forward. There should be (I am basing this off my Maxima and other starters I have replaced) 2 bolts that hold it onto the side of the tranny and a positive and negative wire. Basically disconnect the wires from it being careful not to touch them to anything or together. Then take off the 2 bolts and pull it off. Bolt the new one on, replace the wires and your good. Just look at the new one you buy and you will understand how to take it off.

From what I gather, it might be that your starter is loose. The gears on the starter are grinding with the gears on the flywheel, making the grinding noise. Get under the car and look to see that your starter isn't loose.

My Maxima had a similar problem. The solenoid on the starter went bad. It would spin the starter but it wouldn't push the gear over and engage the flywheel.

Should be very straightforward as others have mentioned, but take the time to disconnect the battery first.

Depending on where you purchase a new one (or reman), you can usually obtain a credit (or core) if you bring back the old one.

Just get a reman one from your favorite auto parts store. The quality of them seem to be a hit or miss, but they usually come with a lifetime warranty.

Some of them can be quite tough to access, so good luck.
