C&D: Winter tire comparison
Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of comparisons and articles in the paper the past month or so. I still don't think I'll ever sway too far from Nokian or Gislaved, although I have heard some good things about certain Michelin snows (mostly for ice).
Winter tires??! 80*F-85*F here in LA/Orange County today depending on area, dropping to high 70s tomorrow, except at the beach where it'll be overcast and about 70*F.

We can just use "summer tires" all year.
Seems more like an advertisement for Michelin than a winter tire comparison. It is nice to see the differences between the categories of tires though.
I gotta get off my butt and order some winter tires soon before the snow hits. Tire rack has a good deal on Blizzack LM-25s right now.

Yupp, they're clearing out the LM25s to make way for their new model, the LM60(?). I ordered and received my order from Tirerack within the week. Up here, it's well worth it to have a dedicated set of winters.
Winter tires? They actually make those?
I actually could have had my t-tops off today if I wanted! And I drive on my summer tires year-round too
thankfully they do an amazing job in the wet. :ibsomeonementionstaxesandcostoflivingetc:and finally now I know the purpose of HX MXM4s... terrible tires but I guess they had some all-around performance (including snow/ice) in mind.

That said i personally love the Dunlop Wintersport M3 and 3D. A nice blend of performance and great snow traction. The tire isnt soft or squishy at speed.
Exactly my thought when i got that issue. To be fair they should have tested other snow tires from other manufacturers.

I have the M3s and they are great. Feels a lot like an all season tire but much better in rain/snow/slush, quiet on the road, and mine are lasting longer than I expected. Plus, the whole tire is winter compound instead of half winter and half all season like the Blizzaks.
i have a set of michelin alpins for the winter that seemt o work very well. I bought them used last year and i can get a few more years out of them. They handle very well on dry pavement and on snow.
Everyone at work drives their 4x4 to work and i make it here before them in my fwd car..
I had run ws50 on my clp and they were nice, but they were a very soft tire and i had to reduce speed on dry corners. They were awesome on snow though.

Great tire, I had the previous model WS-50 on my TL, thing felt like it was tank in all snow conditions. You have to be a little more cautious after a few years once you wear past the air bubbles that are injected into the rubber on the first 60% of the tread, they felt a little greasy then, but would dig through anything.
I'm not buying Michelin's statement that 1/3 of traction is attributed to rubber compound and 2/3 is tread pattern. Think this is why the tires that are manufactured in the tundra are so much better...
Way cold temps, allseason compound becomes hocky pucks
What works for me is mica or something in the compound, the snow sticks to the tire, and snow on snow traction is great

I read that article last week and couldn't believe they had anything good to say about the MXM4's, those came on my CL and I could hardly move in the snow with those. If they would have come out and said that the MXM4's were straight shit in the snow, I would give their report some credibility, anything less than that is biased in my opinion.

I hear the Nokians go all the way through, will get them next time. Would have got them last time but nearly impossible to buy around here, called three dealers, not one of them even returned a quote! Think it was because what I wanted, they didn't have in stock, and they primarily sell other brands
