Buying a car out of state, What to do?

Hi,
I am looking to buy an NSX out of state from a private owner. The owner has the title in hands, and I have cash in hands. If I buy it, how is it going to work? What do I need to do or get from him besides the title and a bill of sale? What's the legal and safe process to go through? I want to make sure once I paid, the car is legally mine. Thanks.

for your safety, I am not sure if you can check with the local PD as far as the vin number is concerned. But I would definitely want to photocopy his d/l so that you have his picture at least.

get the VIN and verify it with the state DMV... make sure that it is registered to his name and address and it is not stolen...

when you complete the transaction, make sure that you verify the VIN # on the title to the VIN# on the vehicle... verify the title is authentic and ask if it is possible for a copy of his D/L... he may refuse seeing as how that information is pretty important... but it should be okay if it doesn't''' i would verify the address on the title to his drivers license...

then when u get the car enjoy it.. NSX wow...

I would try and have a current NSX owner go and look at it. Also even spring for a PPI to be done by a Acura Tech. It might cost $100 but could end up saving you lots of headaches and $$$$ in the future.
Run a carfax if you haven't already.
Depending on year of the car, there are many things you need to look out for before buying.
BTW, where are you and where is the car?

1. Have the car looked at by a qualified mechanic + get a carfax report.

2. Avoid cash if possible, use a bank check or certifed check (this simply gives you a record of the transaction, plus you avoid carrying a large sum of $$$ around)

3. Have the seller go to the DMV with you. Most likely, you'll need a temporary tag to drive it out of state anyway. You can verify the VIN, car registration here as well.

4. Ask for a Bill of Sale

5. Do the deal at his bank. They can notorize the Bill of Sale, photocopy driver's licenses, the check, etc.

6. make sure there are no liens on the vehicle and the seller signs the title over to you.

wow this is a lots of work for me to do since I am located on the west coast and the owner is in washington DC. I probably can only take the weekend(including friday) to fly there and look at it since I am pretty busy with work right now. I'll have to see how this is going to work out.

I just bought my car out of state last weekend. I went there and the guy had everything ready(bills of sale, title, records). I checked the carfax report before I even bothered. The car actually looked in a better condition than I had hoped! I found the car on another forum and checked his posts. He seemed like a legit guy who was taking good care of the car.

Depending on the year model of the car, there are certain things that you NEED to find out for sure about before you make the flight/trip to get the car. I wouldn't worry so much about the legal until you make sure that this is the car you want and everything checks mechanically/physically.
I would maybe visit WWW.NSXPRIME.COM and do some research there.
